Hit Spring Water for Kids review

As the temperatures have been soaring for the past week or so (even if they dropped dramatically today), I've been spending half of my time filling glasses, bottles and sippy cups with various drinks to keep the kids hydrated.

We had a bit of a surreal moment by the fridge at one point. I said : "What do you want to drink : SodaStream, orange juice or squash ?" Juliette and Sophie both said in synch : "Nooo, water !". Not just any water though - they wanted to try the new Hit Spring Water that I'd received to review. Juliette because of the cool cartoon characters on the bottles and Sophie because she liked the Fruit Shoots-type bottle that meant she could go straight back outside on her bike !

We received three bottles of water, featuring the three TV characters Angelina Ballerina, Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam - in a brilliant lunchbox which Sophie has already claimed, and they all went down a storm.

It may seem like a cynical way of getting kids to beg their mums and dads to buy the brand but it stems from a worrying piece of research : Silver Spring were alarmed to learn that only 6% of children drink their recommended daily allowance of water. The aim is that by making the bottles as fun and engaging as colourful soft drinks, kids will be encouraged to drink more water.

But that's not the only advantage. Hit Water explain : "Studies show that the high sugar content of soft drinks is a key factor in the rise of childhood obesity. Through replacing these drinks with good old fashioned water, which contains no calories at all, the health of your little ones can be drastically improved. What’s even better, is that with your little ones desperate to get their hands on a colourful bottle featuring their favourite character, drinking water can become a fun activity instead of a chore! Silver Spring’s HIT British Spring Water comes in handy 300ml bottles, which means it’s easy to work out if your child has consumed their recommended daily intake of water. 4-8 year olds should drink 1.2 litres a day and so will already be well on the way towards their quota after just one little bottle."

If Sophie and Juliette are anything to go by, this will be an instant hit and could actually make plain water into a popular drink for kids. That has to be a good thing.

star rating : 5/5

RRP : 49p per300ml bottle or £2.49 for a pack of 6

HIT Children’s Spring Water will be available to buy in Boots and Asda from June 2011
