Davidstow Cornish Classic Lighter cheddar review

Earlier in the year, we reviewed (here) some delicious cheddar cheese from Davidstow - both the Davidstow Cornish Classic mature cheddar and Davidstow Cornish Crackler extra mature cheddar - and they got a well-deserved 5/5 star rating. I was therefore really keen to get testing when I was offered some of the new Davidstow Cornish Classic Lighter to try out.

The Davidstow Lighter - which contains 315 calories per 100g as opposed to 416 for the Classic cheddars -contains 30% less fat than their normal cheeses, but the website still promises "a lighter cheese with no compromise on flavour". I was impressed to see that the Lighter option is still a mature cheddar and I have to agree that it does taste just as good. It can be used just like the Classic cheddar, in a sandwich or on crackers, on a cheese board and in cooking.

Davidstow is proud of its Cornish roots and has partnered with Cornish chef, Nathan Outlaw, whose restaurant Nathan Outlaw in Rock recently received its second Michelin star, to create a collection of recipes that you can see here. He suggests enjoying Grilled Pear and Pickled Walnuts with Classic Lighter on Toast accompanied by a chilled sparking rosé. Having checked out the recipes on the website, I personally love the sound of Smoked Fish Pie with Crackler Mash Topping (which sounds very similar to a recipe I already use), Crackler and Rosemary Focaccia and Crackler Pasty, but they all look lovely so go and have a look yourselves to choose your favourites and try them out.

NEW Davidstow Cornish Classic Lighter is available exclusively in Tesco stores nationwide in 345g packs at £3.99

star rating : 5/5

RRP : £3.99 for 345g

  1. Brilliant! Will look out for this. We tried another brand of Lighter mature cheese recently and found the texture really let it down...so happy you've tried this one out for us!
