Children's Book Review : My Dad and My Mum - Anthony Browne

2-year-old Pierre has been having great fun lately looking at all the fabulous picture books we've received to review. The latest ones that he discovered are Anthony Browne's eternal classics, My Mum and My Dad.

Both of these books celebrate the hero-worship that all toddlers have for their parents and are a wonderful, feel-good read for parents and children to share. I will admit that on my first read, the rather stereotypical images of the mum cooking and doing the shopping, while the dad gets rid of the monsters and is good at sports slightly irritated me. But the mum is also capable of being anything she wants, including astronaut or boss (complete with fluffy slippers !) and the dad does some signing and dancing ! In any case, I have to admit that here at The Madhouse, I DO do all the cooking and Madhouse Daddy Mike IS the one who opens the really stiff jars, so it only makes sense to present these views to toddlers too. I'll get off my soapbox already !

The excited cries of delight from Pierre as he listened to the words and discovered the fabulous illustrations were totally heart-melting and I even managed to snap a picture of him copying the Dad's face on the front of the book ! Too cute for words !

The "mum and dad will love me forever" message is reassuring for children, the pictures are full of little details that will make even the grown-ups smile (I love the dad whose hair looks like the broom when he is daft as a brush !) and you are guaranteed to end up saying "awwww" and sharing lots of cuddles when you've finished reading ! I have read both of these so many times since they arrived, it's unbelievable - and Pierre is STILL asking me to read them again and again !

If you're looking for a slightly sentimental gift for Father's Day or Mother's Day this year, these would be absolutely perfect too.
