Dressing babies and toddlers is a piece of cake because they will make anything look ultra-cute and they're always designed with crawling/jumping/wriggly/highly active wearers in mind. Fast forward ten years and you'll realise how hard it is to dress tween girls. Sophie is a perfect example. Aged 10, she is nearly as tall as me and wears size 6 shoes - in fact, we laughed our heads off yesterday because we put our bare feet together and realised her feet are now bigger than mine. Depending on the brand, she usually needs age 14 clothes.
The trouble is, Sophie is 10, not 14, so I don't want her wearing the ultra-sexy "young woman" fashion that a lot of clothing manufacturers market. I don't want her dressing up as a goth either or wearing high heels or ultra skinny jeans. I want "little girl" fashion because she's not even into her teens yet. Oh and it has to be wearable too, for all the bike-riding, climbing on the climbing frame and running around in the park that she'll be doing. Too much to ask for ? Well, a lot of the time, yes.
So when we were contacted by George clothing at Asda to ask if I'd like to enter a blogger challenge to come up with our perfect Easter Sunday outfit spending just £20, I instantly saw loads of gorgeous things that would be perfect for 2-year-old Pierre or 7-year-old Juliette but didn't hold out much hope for Sophie as I headed off to look at the Older Girls Clothes.
Well, as you can see from the picture, I found the perfect outfit. It's cute and girly without being overly babyish and is really wearable, not to mention easy to wash. If you're thinking that it's not very "Easter Sunday best", Easter Sunday for us is spent on a big Easter Egg hunt, running around a muddy park trying to find eggs up trees and under bushes so a pretty dress just wouldn't work ! The Hello Kitty top and leggings come together as a set, costing a very reasonable £12, and the trainers are just £6. The bunny ears were our own and the stuck-out tongue is pure Sophie !
That left £2 which was more than enough to buy a pair of Spiderman socks for Pierre that he was incredibly proud of !
But I have an extra piece of good news for you all. ReplyDeleteIt's always so hard to get clothing that fits for kids when they're small. Trousers usually end up with fifty turn ups at the bottom or fly half mast above the ankles !!

ReplyDeleteI'm a teacher of teens, but the youngest are 11, only a year older than Sophie. I shudder at some of the "fashions" they wear - one girl did the full bra staps showing and thong sticking out of the back of her trousers. I was forever telling her to cover herself up, which caused a lot of eye-rolling ! Far too young in my opinion !

DeleteI love the Hello Kitty outfit. Great to find a top that is a decent length as leggings can often look a bit "indecent" when the Tshirt is too short !!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree ! Once they get past a certain age, girls really should avoid very clingy leggings with a short top. It leaves very little to the imagination !

ReplyDeleteI agree with your re clothes for young girls. Not an easy thing to do, you don't want them to look like adults, and going for the "sexy" look is totally wrong. Sophie looks lovely in her outfit!

ReplyDeleteI remember when I had just girls, the mums of boys always used to say they were jealous at the huge choice of colours and styles for girls' clothing, compared to boys' clothes which were all a bit samey. Now I've got Pierre, I can see what they mean but it does make it so much easier finding things that go together because they're all pretty much the same basic colours !

And I thought I used to struggle getting boys clothes for that age - very little choice I used to find, but can see how difficult it must be to get good clothes for playing in and not looking too old for your age - Love the look you & Sophie got together - especially the ears ;))
