Propercorn Popcorn review

PROPERCORN, the newly launched gourmet, British, popcorn brand, say that they are ready to show the nation how popcorn is done properly. Starting off with The Madhouse !

As you can see from the photo, the girls were over the moon when we received some bags to try out. What you can't see in this photo is that Madhouse Daddy Mike was also hovering in the background waiting to give it a taste ! He's quite right though - this is labelled as gourmet popcorn so it's definitely perfect for discerning adults to savour.

We received two flavours to try - Sweet & Salty and Fiery Worcester Sauce & Sun Dried Tomato, but there are also two other flavours available - Sour Cream & Chive and Lightly Sea Salted - with others on the way. We often eat popcorn here at The Madhouse but it's usually something that I can take or leave. We generally use microwavable popcorn to get a fresh taste and soft texture but it's really hard to time it right so that you get the perfect moment where a large majority of the kernels have popped but before they have started to burn. I found that this Propercorn had the freshly popped softness that we like.

Unlike a lot of shop-bought popcorn which is overly sweet and sugary because it has been caramelised to within an inch of its life, the Propercorn has a more subtle, natural flavour that is perfectly balanced and that grows in intensity as you continue to munch. The girls preferred the Sweet & Salty one while the grown-us loved the more unusual, unexpected spiciness of the Fiery Worcester Sauce & Sun Dried Tomato variety.

Propercorn is being dubbed a guilt-free snack so I turned to the nutritional information to investigate. I was actually pleasantly surprised to learn that a big 30g bag only contains about 100 calories - 128 calories for the Sweet & Salty and 96 calories for the Fiery Worcester Sauce & Sun Dried Tomato one - so it's certainly much lighter than crisps or sweets. It is also high in fibre and made with 100 wholegrain.

Propercorn say that they follow secret recipes that use only the most authentic ingredients (including garden chives, roasted onions, sun-dried tomatoes and crème fraiche). This presumably explains why in a blind taste test, 92% of people preferred Propercorn to other popular popcorn brand. It gets the Madhouse seal of approval for its original flavours, softness and low calorie count.

  5. To the pathetic person from Sunbury Manor School in Twickenham who has nothing better to do than spend 20 minutes trolling my site, get a life. I pity you if you're that bored. However, I will not stand for you insulting my children. I've logged your IP address. Keep it up and I'll take it up with your internet provider, as well as phoning the school. It won't be too hard to track which session on a school computer ran a search on "Madhouse Family Reviews popcorn". Believe me, I work in a school and we've done it many times. Now, get a life and find something better to do with your time.
