Ace Trumps Poisonous Animals review

When I was asked if I'd like to review Ace Trumps, I got all nostalgic for a moment. I remember playing Trumps with my friends and family when I was a kid, and I always love getting back to basics, rediscovering long-forgotten family favourites, so I jumped at the chance.

We received the "Poisonous Animals" card pack, but there are many others available, ranging from cars and helicopters to farm machines. (I have to admit, I'd prefer a few more "girl-friendly" themes because it's a bit top heavy on motorised vehicles.) Each card belongs to a family, either insects, snakes, reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, fish or molluscs, and presents a whole host of fascinating facts that your kids (and even the grown-ups !) will love discovering. The cards give you the name, size, poisonousness (is that really a word ?!), aggressiveness, velocity and poison organ, so even when they're not playing, kids will love reading up on the deadly creatures and filling you in on the goriest details.

The instructions suggest two different ways to play. The object of the first game, Quartet, is to collect as many families (groups of 4 cards) as possible, just as you'd play Happy Families. For the actual Trumps game, you need to choose a category on your top card (size, poisonousness, etc) and challenge your opponents to see who has the highest value in that category on their current card, with the winner taking all the other cards. It's a great game for families because no skill is involved, it's purely down to luck, so kids of different ages can play with equal chances of winning. They'll also pick up lots of scientific facts about the animals along the way without even realising they're learning - alway the best way !

The cards come in a really handy plastic case which will prevent them getting lost and also makes this into the perfect travel game. It's a great pocket money-priced gift or, later on the year, the perfect stocking stuffer.

  1. My middle daughter absolutely adores Topps Trumps but has virtually every pack that we have ever been able to find in the shops! I read your review with interest and having never heard of this range before, think I will definitely have to have a look on-line for this range. They are perfect for putting in the holiday suitcases and cabin bags as they weight virtually nothing and keep her amused for hours!
