In Cold Grave, we pick up the story of DS Rachel Narey and crime scene photographer Tony Winter who started an uneasy relationship at the end of Snapshot (which I reviewed here). You certainly don't need to have read that book to understand their behind-closed-doors relationship and to fully appreciate the book though.
With Tony Winter not being a police investigator, Craig Robertson needs to come up with a plot involving an off-the-record case that the pair can get their teeth into. This is provided by Rachel's ex-policeman father, sinking into Alzheimer's and haunted by "the one that got away", his last case that he failed to crack, involving a young girl found battered to death on an island that had become accessible when the lake surrounding it froze over during an exceptionally cold winter 20 years before.
It's a cracking read, full of twists and turns; new leads, double-crossing and unexpected discoveries which is guaranteed to keep you turning the pages long after your bedtime, trying to guess whodunnit and failing every time !
The descriptions are so atmospheric that I could feel the bitter chill of the harsh Scottish winter despite reading it while lazing on a sun-baked beach in Tunisia while on holiday !
