New research by Brewers Fayre reveals 50% of young people see parents as their real heroes.

A survey commissioned by the family restaurant Brewers Fayre refreshingly reveals that 50% of children cite their mums and dads as their heroes above footballers, pop stars and other celebrities. When asked about the qualities that make a ‘real’ hero, 83% of children said that courage and bravery define a hero rather than fame, fortune or good looks.

When it comes to celebrities as a source of heroism, a summer of sport has inspired, with nearly 40% of children in favour Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis as their new celebrity idols, the research reveals. Surprisingly, Simon Cowell and Joey Essex appeared at the bottom of the list of those who children most look up to.

To celebrate all things heroic, Brewers Fayre has re-launched the Local Heroes initiative, a bursary scheme to support the unsung heroes of our community, following the success of similar campaigns in 2009 and 2010.

Brewers Fayre’s ambassador Jeff Brazier is backing the Local Heroes initiative for 2012, where the scheme continues to recognise those who give their time to improve the lives of their fellow local residents. Whether it’s volunteers who commit themselves to charity work, or local coaches that train the junior Sunday League team out of the goodness of their heart, all are eligible for a share of a £10,000 pot. Once awarded, the cash can be invested towards continuing their community projects within the area.

Jeff Brazier, ambassador for the Brewers Fayre Local Heroes campaign commented: “It’s really important to recognise those around the UK who give tirelessly to others, devoting their own time to help local causes and so I’m delighted to be working with Brewers Fayre on the Local Heroes campaign this year. As a father, it’s also especially encouraging to hear that children acknowledge and respect everyday heroes and the good work they do as their role models.”

To nominate someone for this year’s awards all you need to do is visit the Brewers Fayre website www.brewersfayre.co.uk/localheroes  and fill in the online entry form. Alternatively, complete an application form at your local Brewers Fayre restaurant describing why you believe your nominee deserves to be honoured for their work and the amount that could really make a difference.

Emma Price, spokesperson for Brewers Fayre commented; “We’re thrilled to have Jeff Brazier on board with us for this campaign. As today’s research reveals, parents are the new superheroes for many children and as a devoted father and avid supporter of charity work, Jeff is a great ambassador for the Local Heroes scheme.”
