Teach your Monster to Read: First Steps is a new, free game designed to practise the first steps of reading that has been assessed by reading experts at the University of Roehampton. It is built on the principles of synthetic phonics and follows the teaching sequence of the Letters and Sounds programme, but above all, it's great fun ! Chief tester of the day has been 7-year-old Juliette who has been having a play and we've decided it's the perfect blend of fun and learning for beginner readers. Juliette loved creating her own monster to play with and the colours are really bright and cheerful. The tasks are a bit repetitive but Juliette didn't seem to mind and happily played for ages, relishing practising her letter recognition and phonics. Perfect !
And if a fun, educational and totally free game isn't good enough already, I have some even better news for you. There is currently a competition running on the website where you can win £200 of Usborne books. For a chance to win, they’re asking children to draw (or paint or build) a monster and send a photograph of the finished work to go in their online gallery.
The monster can be one from the Teach Your Monster to Read game or from your imagination – it can be friendly, spooky, scary or silly! The Madhouse Mini-Testers have just had a go and here are their creations :
