Book review : A Winter Flame - Milly Johnson

"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos."

If those lyrics have you humming along, grinning as you imagine biting into a still-warm-from-the-oven mince pie while watching the snowflakes falling outside, the kids throwing snowballs at each other and the lights twinkling on the Christmas tree, then Milly Johnson's latest offering, A Winter Flame, is the perfect read for you in the run up to the big day.

It's classic chicklit so there are no big surprises and you know the will-they-won't-they relationship between Eve, who has always hated Christmas with a passion, especially after her soldier sweetheart was killed on Christmas Day, and the mysterious Jacques Glace, will have the obligatory happy ending. It's cheesier than a Quattro Formaggio pizza but, after a tough week of extremely long parent-teacher evenings and a stinking rotten cold, it was just what the doctor ordered and I really looked forward to my nightly literary feel-good therapy, snuggling up under the covers to read a few pages and get a smile back on my face before bedtime.

The heart-warming tale of Eve and Jacques' mission to bring to life the madcap winter wonderland theme park dreamed up by Eve's late great-aunt does also have a few important lessons for us, reminding us that life is for living and we should make the most of every second we have on Earth, never knowing when our time will come.

It made me smile many times, it even brought a tear to my eye on a few occasions, but above all, it left me feeling warm and snuggly inside, which is perfect when the temperatures have dropped outside and the nights are drawing in. If you love Christmas, this will get you into the perfect festive mindset for the run up to the big day.
