Festive family viewing - Arthur Christmas DVD review

*** Don't miss my giveaway to win 3 copies of the DVD here on my blog ! ***

The usual festive Madhouse Family movie of choice is The Polar Express (which I reviewed here last year) but I think it may actually have been ousted - or at least matched - by a total newcomer, Arthur Christmas.

The film has been created by Aardman Animations (makers of Chicken Run) and Sony Pictures Animations (who created The Smurfs) and is a very smooth, computer-generated, 3d animation that really appeals to the whole family. In other words, it's not one of those films that the parents watch just to keep the kids happy; they'll actually enjoy it too, partly because they'll recognise the voice of Hugh Laurie (amongst others) and partly because it's such a feel-good and funny movie that you can't help but get swept along with the merriment.

The story attempts to answer a timeless Christmas question that has been on generations of children's lips - how does Santa manage to deliver all of those presents in just one short night? Well, whatever answer you may have come up with in the past to answer your own kids, I bet you'd never have dreamed up the one offered by the film - a high-tech operation carried out with military precision involving an army of highly-trained elves and a state-of-the-art control centre under the North Pole ! Nevertheless, one child has - shock, horror ! - been overlooked so it's down to Santa's son, Arthur, to save the day (and the magic of Christmas) and put things right.

Not just believers (of Father Christmas) but also Beliebers will be happy because the soundtrack features Justin Bieber's version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town (and you get the music video in the bonuses). Cue much squealing from the resident Madhouse tween Sophie !

It gets top marks from us as perfect family viewing in the run up to Christmas.
