On the third day of Christmas, the Madhouse reviewed for thee ...
a My Style Design & Make Deluxe Charm Bracelets kit !

We've reviewed several of the My Style craft kits already, so I guessed that this one would go down just as well. They always allow tween and teen girls to create some really lovely, professional-looking accessories all by themselves which is brilliant.

I did do a bit of a double take when I opened the box because there is lots of empty space. Excess packaging is one of my pet peeves and it also makes me feel that the manufacturer has been dishonest when you buy a box that is much bigger than the product inside, as if they're trying to make it look better than it is. This box could have been half the size, to be honest.

Once you've unpacked everything, there is quite a lot in there though. You get a mixture of metal beads and charms and the components for creating your own beads using polymer clay and a variety of extra bits like glitter or metallic foil.

I've just checked the contents list (I wasn't really going to sit down and count them all !) and there are : 2 bracelets, 2 gift pouches, 10 charms, 8 dice charms, 80 eyelets, 10 charm split-rings, Polymer clay in 7 colours, Wooden toothpicks, Wooden Dowel, 3 bags of glitter, Craft foil in 2 colours, 2 storage boxes.

The instruction book shows you how to use the modelling clay to create funky beads using blends of colours, patterns or even added glitter or metallic glitz. They need baking to make them go hard and resistant.

The instructions are detailed and simple to follow, although trying to get really professional looking beads isn't as easy as it looks. I told Sophie that the homemade look is good though because it makes it totally personal so she shouldn't try too hard aim for perfection !

The little black velvet pouches are a lovely touch if you decide you want to keep one and give one away as a homemade, totally unique gift for someone special. After all that hard work, I'd be very surprised for Sophie to be ready to give one up though and I have to say, I don't blame her !

star rating : 4.5/5

  2. love the sound of this. Piper likes anything crafty and she's quite into her jewellery too so this looks like a smashing idea for a pressie.
I agree with you about empty space in packaging though, not only because of the waste of resources in making the packaging but also because I think of how many more items could be carried in a lorry or trailer if the oxes were smaller - think of the CO2 we could reduce if haulage companies could carry twice as much in a single container.
