Matt Hatter Chronicles magazine review

When I first heard the name Matt Hatter, it made me think of the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland ! That has nothing to do with it though ! Matt Hatter is an animated adventure/comedy series for 5-10 year olds which airs on ITV1 and CITV every Saturday and Sunday at 7.40am. The series tells the adventures of a 13-year-old boy, called - you guessed it ! - Matt Hatter, whose life changes forever when he discovers that his family are guardians of a secret dimension called the Multiverse, the gateway to which is accessed through The Coronet movie theatre, Matt’s home. Famous villains from movies screened at The Coronet have escaped into the Multiverse and are now under the control of evil Lord Tenoroc. In a quest to protect the Multiverse and save his Grandpa, Matt must become the new Hatter hero and, together with his best friends Roxie and Gomez, defeat and capture the villains using their ultra-cool gadgetry.

We were given the chance to review this month's Matt Hatter comic. It comes with some great freebies attached to the front cover (and for once, it was easy to pull them off without the sellotape ripping the magazine to shreds !) - a Matt Hatter 3D Crossbow Blaster to test your skills and take aim at the 3D villain targets (ready to cut out on the back page) and a hilarious mask with inbuilt 3D-glasses. (Oh sorry, make that a 3D Multivision Visor !) The gadgets are actually integrated into the stories in the magazine, which is a nice touch.

Sophie was very impressed with the oodles of 3D images in the magazine that "come to life" when wearing the glasses.

Juliette found them a bit on the big size but still had fun wearing them, even if she did look a bit wonky !

The magazine is very brightly coloured and visually appealing, with a wide range of activities and reading sections. There's a comic strip (with 3D images), actually written by the writer of the TV series...

... several activity pages with a maze, wordsearch, spot the difference (again in 3D), a double page maze, a grid to learn to draw Matt Hatter ...

The middle pages are a pull-out 3D poster.

You also get longer texts to read to learn all about Matt and his family, the villains and other background information about the series. There is also a competition, a call-out for drawings of villains and a fun quiz.

Even if you're not familiar with the series (and I have to admit, we weren't), it's an exciting, fun-packed magazine and Sophie really enjoyed reading it. The programme targets 5-10-year-olds and I would say the magazine definitely suits the upper end of this age range as some of the texts are quite long. Any fan of the TV show will be totally blown away.

The magazine costs £3.99 which isn't cheap, but you do get some great toys added. It's a 36 page glossy magazine, but I was surprised to see that the pages inside are actually quite a bit smaller than the front and back page.

The Totally ... magazines feature a different theme each month. Back issues include Madagascar 3, Hot Wheels, Merlin, WWF and Star Wars. The Matt Hatter Chronicles issue is only on sale in February so get your skates on (then get your 3D Multivision Visor on !)

star rating : 4.5/5
