Last night, we discovered a new book at bedtime called The House Rabbit. It's the simple but enchanting tale of a worrywort bunny who wakes with a start and is convinced his house is falling down. He runs through the house in a panic, collecting all the other four-legged residents on the way, until a level-headed moth points out that it was probably nothing and leads him back to the place where he was so scared where they discover that it was just a book falling from the shelf.
The story reminded me of Chicken Licken thinking that the sky was falling on his head when it was just an acorn and was a great way of explaining to Pierre that, when he thinks it's a monster under his bed, it's always just the rain pattering on the window or a shadow on the wall.
The accompanying illustrations use muted colours and are beautifully drawn. Pierre stopped me on every page to point something out or make a comment.
It's a lovely story to share with young children, especially those of a nervous disposition who may well see some of their fears allayed.
