This week's fruit & veg box

How sad is that I get really excited about picking up our weekly fruit and veg box ?! It's only the second week so the novelty may eventually wear off but me and Sophie both gaily skipped off to the market at the end of our road to see what we'd get and oohed and aahed excitedly as we discovered the contents !

For the fruit, we got some apples (I really should start learning the different varieties because he keeps giving us a mix - I'd got into a rut of buying Granny Smiths and Golden Delicious so it's nice to have a change. I think the one at the front is a Pink Lady ? There's a Golden Delicious and not sure what the others are - any experts out there?), a pear, some strawberries, an orange, ummm ... I need to revise my citrus fruit too, I'm not sure what the different varieties are, the light orange, squished shape one looks interesting ! Now, the fruit on the left are what I've always known as kakis because that's what they're called in France but judging by the label stuck on one of them, I think these are persimmons - ahh I always wondered what they are ! They're lovely and sweet and the kids love them, whatever they are !

For the veggies, this week we got some mushrooms, red and green peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, shallots, garlic, carrots, potatoes and broccoli. I made an absolutely delicious Beef & Broccoli stir fry last night and Pierre consumed his entire body weight in broccoli because I told him they were Tree Fu Tom trees !!

If anyone has any fab fruit or veg recipes that we can try out, feel free to share your links in the comments below.

  1. It feels SO good to eat healthy and my kids love fruit, they'd rather fruit than sweets! Not sure about the names of some of them though. x

  2. These fruit boxes look lovely, I'm going to look into getting one in my local area. How much do you pay for yours?

    1. There's no scheme in place here so I just chatted up my local fruit & veg man and asked if he'd make me up a weekly box for €10, you could fix whatever price you want I guess. You'd pay more for all organic and/or local produce though.

  6. I love persimmons (known as kaki in Italy as well). In Russia they are called hurma (I guess the name might be of a Turkish origin). Apples could be Gala or Braeburn, not easy to say from looking at the photo. I get my fruit & veg box from Abel & Cole. Looking forward to seeig what you cook with the lot

    1. Most of it has gone already - beef & broccoli stir fry used up lots of the veggies and the fruit is disappearing faster than I can fill the fruit bowl !! I'm glad I know what a persimmon is now - I've been eating them for years without knowing !! lol

    1. Ooh you had me intrigued so I went to google. They have these in France and call them "flat peaches" - I'll have to tell the kids they're called donut peaches next time we see them !!
