It's Fairtrade fortnight which instantly makes me think of all the fairtrade foodstuffs and beauty products that I can throw in the trolley when doing the weekly shop, but I have to admit, I'd never really thought about clothing. I knew that Boys&Girls - who you may remember from my giveaway a while ago - already used GOTS certified organic cotton for creating their funky but functional kids and toddler clothes, but a recent email alerted me to the fact that they have also introduced a range of fully certified Fairtrade Cotton Tees, which they hope to extend as the company grows.
They explain : "At present only some of our range carries the Fairtrade Mark. In simple terms, this is due to the fact that our order quantities are not yet big enough to get us into the FLO Certified dye houses. Which seems unfair. However, our aim is for the whole range to carry the Fairtrade Mark in the future and we are working hard to make that happen. We choose to use Fairtrade Certified Cotton because we feel it’s the right thing to do. It is not the easiest or cheapest method, which is probably why not everyone chooses to do it."
We received one of Boys&Girls "Bright As Day" T-shirts from their Fairtrade range. It's a really high quality shirt, made with lovely soft cotton and vibrant colours. Pierre loves it, but the only problem is, it's way too big for him to wear at the moment because I ordered size 4/5, worried that the 3/4 would be too small (he's now aged 3 and a half) and it's actually quite generously cut. That's not a problem though - I've put it in his cupboard for when he's a bit bigger.
The T-shirt is a simple design that really encapsulates everything that Boys&Girls stand for. It's totally unisex and totally wearable. The company explain that ‘Out To Play’ is a bit of a mantra at Boys&Girls HQ, adding : "If it’s not comfortable and practical enough for playing in then it’s not worth wearing". That's a great concept for a company producing toddler clothes ! I also love the fact that, as everything is designed to be unisex, you can hand their clothes down from older children to younger siblings regardless of their gender, which is great news for the pocket and the planet as you will get much more wear out of them.
