Earth Day Kids' Craft Project : Planet Ocean-themed Shopping Bag

This Monday, 22nd April, is Earth Day. It also coincides with the release date of a new documentary called Planet Ocean. The 90-minute film, narrated by father-to-be Josh Duhamel, seeks to explore and explain one of the greatest natural mysteries of our planet - the ocean. It hopes to raise awareness of the importance of our oceans and what we can do to make sure that they remain one of the greatest wonders of our world for our children and our children’s children.

It's never been easier to engage children in conservational projects and teach them the importance of looking after the world around us. There are loads of fun ways to be environmentally friendly, so why not start with an easy and fun project between parent and child by making your own jazzy eco shopping bag to re-use at the supermarket. Here's a handy step-by-step guide, with lovely sparkly photos, to show you how to make your very own unique version.

Planet Ocean-Themed Shopping Bag

What you'll need:

Recycled Canvas Bag £0.79
Craft Jar £5.00
Fabric Paint (18 bottles with assorted colours in matt, pearlised and glitter finishes) £9.99
Glitter pots (24 dust powder pots) £4.15

(All available from Amazon.co.uk)

You will also need:
Scissors
Pencil

Choose your desired pattern or picture and stencil around the image with a pencil.

Using the fabric paint, colour in your image and use the flat side of the ice lolly stick from the craft jar to smooth out the paint. Once you’ve coloured in your aquatic animal use one of the darker coloured fabric paints to outline the edges of your picture.

While the fabric paint dries, use the PVA glue provided to stick down the letters from the craft jar for whatever caption you wish.

Curl pipecleaners into a circular shape and stick down with PVA along with yellow fringe crepe paper to give you a 3D sun. Stick down green crepe paper to create your own seaweed for your deep sea themed canvas bag.

Now that your fabric paint has dried, apply PVA and spread with a different ice lolly stick. Use the twenty four colours of glitter provided in the glitter pot pack to sprinkle over your picture to make it sparkle.

Stick down the bow provided in the craft jar and use the fabric paints to outline the letters you stuck down earlier.

Make your canvas bag stand out even more by adding sequins and more glitter. You can also use the mini pom poms and felt flowers to create your own starfish, fish, and crab.

Leave your bag to dry properly for 4-6 hours. And there you have it; your own conservational eco canvas bag raising awareness of our Planet Ocean.

Planet Ocean is out on DVD and Blu Ray on 22nd April to celebrate Earth Day.
