Picture book review : Lion and Mouse - Catalina Echeverri

This week at The Madhouse, we've been reading Lion and Mouse, a lovely new picture book written and illustrated by Catalina Echeverri.

It tells the tale of two rather mismatched friends - Lion, who is very full of himself and likes to show off about being the biggest/loudest/strongest, and Mouse, who gets rather fed up with his boastful friend and sneaks off. But Lion has one great fear - the dark - and realises how important and special his little friend is when he rescues him from his worst nightmare, being alone in the dark.

I thought that the illustrations made really clever use of colour and imagery and the texts are very short so they are ideal for beginner readers or young listeners with a very short attention span.

The book ends with a heart-warming message about the importance of friends, and also rather nicely illustrates the message of everybody having strengths and weaknesses and nobody being perfect.

This is one of those books that Pierre likes to "read" all by himself, because the illustrations are so pretty and full of detail.
