Schwartz Grill Mates Smokey Texan Marinade review

Well, we almost got to have a barbecue yesterday, then it started raining at the last minute so we fell back on some marinade to give our steak a lovely smoky flavour instead. I decided to try out Schwartz Grill Mates Smokey Texan Marinade. The clue is in the word Texan. Think Tex-Mex. It may not say spicy on the packet but this one has got a real chilli kick !

You need to mix the contents of the sachet with oil and water then marinade the meat in it for 15 minutes minimum so that it can soak up all that lovely flavour.

The meat seemed to come out really juicy, but I don't really know if that was down to the marinade or not. It has a really lovely smoky flavour which almost made up for the lack of barbecue. I served it with Caribbean wedges and homemade coleslaw, but the depth of flavour would actually go well with slightly bland accompaniments such as mashed potato or rice. I used steak but the pack suggests using it with beef, pork or chicken.

The pack says it serves 4-6 and each serving contains 81 calories, 16.9g of carbohydrates (of which 10.5g sugars), 1.4g of fat (of which 0.1g saturates), 1.4g of fibre and 3.4g of sodium. It's got quite a salty taste so you definitely don't need to add any extra salt to your meat.

star rating : 4/5

RRP : £1.29 for 30g
