McCain Caribbean Wedges review

McCain Potato Wedges have long been adopted as a freezer staple here at The Madhouse. You may remember last year, I tried out lots of different recipes suggested by McCain using them, including French Nicoise Salad, Greek Lamb & Feta Burgers, Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Southern Fried Chicken and British Ploughman Pasties, and it was great to see how they could be incorporated into so many different cooking styles. They recently asked us if we'd like to try out their limited edition Caribbean Wedges.

I wasn't really sure what to expect. Caribbean food is a bit of an unknown for me - the only thing that springs to mind is Jamaican Jerk chicken - so I was expecting something probably quite spicy. Sure enough, when I poured them into a roasting pan, I could see from the colour that they would indeed be spicy. I checked the pack and discovered that they contain Ginger, Red Chilli Pepper, Coriander, Cinnamon and Black Pepper, as well as Tomato Powder, Garlic Powder, Clove Extract and Onion Powder.

After baking them in the oven for 18 minutes, they had turned a lovely golden colour and were crispy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside.

I served them with Smokey Texan Marinated steak and homemade coleslaw. The kids found them to be a little bit too spicy but nothing that a bit of ketchup couldn't sort out ! The grown ups thought that they had just the right amount of chilli kick though.

A bag contains 750g which was plenty for 5 servings. Bearing in mind that each of our servings was 150g of frozen product, 100g contains 158 calories, 6.4g of fat (of which 0.7g saturates), 21g of carbs (of which 0.6g sugar), 2.4g of fibre and 2.9g of protein.

star rating : 4.5/5
