Madhouse diaries : Our final family portraits in Fethiye last year

"Family photo ... family photo ... !" If you've ever been on holiday in an all-inclusive hotel complex, you're bound to have heard the constant cries of the resident photographers, every time you're lazing by the pool or trying to walk into the restaurant. It turned into a bit of an in-joke for us, and we'd often walk into the restaurant the back way or split up into subgroups so that they wouldn't see us as a family and try to convince us to book a sunset photo package for after we'd eaten.

We all had cameras, and if we didn't have our cameras with us, someone invariably had their phone and could catch a quick snap on that, so it seemed pointless paying out for pictures that we could take ourselves.

Then, last year in Turkey, on what was (unbeknownst to us) to be our last ever family holiday before Madhouse Daddy died, we went on a jeep safari with Captain Animal - the guy on the left, who is the owner of the company and one of the drivers and guides. He was hilarious - dressing up in a zebra onesie in sweltering heat, wearing crazy green trainers with individual toes, stopping the convoy of jeeps in a wooded area and, along with the other drivers, pointing up in the trees to see how many local drivers would stop to see what they were pretending to look at ... The whole day was full of fun and laughter.

It was also full of photo opportunities and Captain Animal had a trusty photographer with him, taking numerous photos every time we stopped. It was a bit like being followed by a paparazzi but the good humour of the day kept us smiling.

We saw loads that day. Our first destination was Babadağ, formerly known as Mount Cragus, where we took in the great views and watched the paragliders.

There was even the option to paraglide down and be picked up by the jeeps at the bottom, but we headed over to the little cafe and ate a slice of chocolate cake for Sophie's birthday instead !

We all took variations of this photo, but the problem is, there is always someone missing from the photo. Sophie tried to take some group selfies but they never come out as well as when you are actually behind the camera seeing what the shot looks like.

The official photographer was very snap-happy, taking random shots throughout the day. The woman on the right was someone in our jeep. Madhouse Daddy is gazing wistfully into the distance, enjoying the views, Sophie is in the back and you can just see me and Juliette on the other side of the jeep.

After numerous other visits, including the abandoned town of Kayakoy and the Sea Turtle Rescue Center at Iztuzu beach near Dalyan, we finished off on a boat trip.

As well as a lovely refreshing breeze, this provided plenty of time and stunning backdrops for yet more photos.

Sophie's generally quite happy to pose for photos because she knows that she can use them on her blog and instagram accounts.

But as you've seen from my numerous blogposts featuring the kids, Juliette and Pierre don't always play along, with Juliette in particular sticking her tongue out or screwing up her eyes just as I take the photo !

When it's an official photgrapher and not mum asking for them to get in shot, it's a completely different story though !

As well as the uncomplaining cooperation from the kids, the official photographer also has the added bonus of endless inspiration for poses and angles to get unique pictures that you'd never think of taking yourself.

We had no idea that seven months later, Madhouse Daddy would no longer be with us, and I have no idea why, at the very last minute, I decided to shell out for the cd of photos from our day out in Fethiye.

I'm just very glad that I did, because these will be memories that we can treasure forever.

If I've inspired you to invest in some family portraits of your own but you don't know where to find a local photographer, Bidvine is a great place to start because, as a UK-based local services tech startup, whose biggest service is photography, it's a simple way to find professionals. And if you found my blogpost because you're going to Fethiye and want to find out more about Captain Animal and his jeep safaris, you need to head over here to his Trip Advisor page.

Strange tree at Turtle Beach near Fethiye, Turkey - it wasn't at all windy but I suppose it must be usually.

Globecooking recipe : Chicken Tava (Turkey)

Having seen someone mentioning cooking Chicken Tava on twitter, I went to investigate and discovered that it is a Turkish dish, originally created in Incirlik to appeal to the palates of the American military based there. The problem is, there seem to be as many different recipes as there are cooks and they vary quite a lot - some include potatoes and/or cheese, some use tinned tomatoes while some have a couple of fresh tomatoes in them and others don't have tomatoes in therr at all so it's a much drier dish, some use chicken breast, some use chicken thighs and some a whole chicken ... I read about ten different recipes then shut them all down and made it up as I went along using whatever was in my kitchen. The result was very tasty, although goodness knows how authentic it is !

Chicken Tava

ingredients :

drizzle of olive oil
2 onions
4 chicken breasts
1/2 red pepper
1/2 green pepper
4 mushrooms
a handful of black olives
1tsp Turkish spice (brought back from a Turkish market - not sure what's in it but it's mildly spicy)
1tsp thyme
1tsp cumin
salt, pepper
1tsp harissa or chilli paste
2tsp garlic paste
a tin of chopped tomatoes
a squeeze of tomato puree
some cheese (I used feta and parmesan)

Start by gently frying the onions (and garlic if using fresh instead of paste) in the olive oil.

Chop the chicken and add to the pan.

Throw in the herbs and spices, salt and pepper. Give it all a good stir.

Add the mushrooms and peppers.Keep cooking until the veggies are soft and the chicken is cooked through (but not overcooked - we want juicy chicken, not tough dry chicken !).

Add the tin of chopped tomatoes, the black olives and a squeeze of tomato puree.

Stir through the garlic paste and harissa. Taste and adjust the seasoning, adding extra salt, herbs and spices to suit your tastes.

Crumble some cheese over the top - I used feta and parmesan but you could use cheddar or mozzarella too. Pop under the grill to help the cheese melt. (My feta went soft but refused to melt for some reason !)

Serve with rice and/or Turkish flatbread - hmmm I'd forgotten how good freshly cooked pide is. We'll be heading back to Turkey this summer so I'll definitely be eating lots of that again !

Fancy trying some more Turkish cuisine? How about :

Adding to this month's #KitchenClearout linky because it used up the end of the feta and also some of the condiments (harissa, garlic paste, tomato puree) cluttering up the fridge.

Wish you weren't here?! (Holiday Heaven or Hell Blogger Competition)

A Holiday Heaven or Hell Competition?
I love blogger comps so now I'm on a mission
I decided to put together this little ditty
To show how our resort was ever so sh ...oddy !

The cases are packed, the hotel reserved
Two weeks in the sun are definitely well deserved
Time to relax somewhere sunny and hot
The holiday of your dreams ... or maybe not !

Our holiday hell took place in in Turkey
On arrival the plunge pool looked decidedly murky
The truth of the matter made us feel woozy
The jacuzzi had turned into a ja-poo-zi !

So what was the cause of someone's dodgy belly?
The stream down the beach that was horribly smelly?
The baby's bed that was covered in poo?
Would we spend all our time stuck in the loo?

The hygiene was dodgy, the safety was too
Part of the baby's bed broken in two
We asked for a new one - "we no have more"
What's up now? "Mum, look at the bathroom door!"

Going to the bathroom to wash off the sand
Half of the door-frame came off in her hand
The wood was very chunky - heavy and solid
I've never seen a hotel room look so squalid

Huge cracks down the wall were filled up with glue
Next to streaks that we hoped were water, not poo
Would the holiday rep save the day ?
Err ... she hadn't been to the hotel since May !

So not there to help us nor sell us the trips
No aqua parks, heritage sites or pirate ships
The entertainment on site was all in Russian or German
The only good thing was the lack of cockroaches and vermin !

We enjoyed the sunsets and had fun in the pool
It was better than being at work or at school
But for the first time ever, two weeks was too long
All that excitement for things to go wrong

When we got home, it was time to complain
We sent emails with photos to share our pain
The travel agent replied with a kick in the teeth
For our pains, we could have £15 back - good grief !

But even if our holiday wasn't as planned
It didn't stop us wanting to visit this sunny land
We've since been to Turkey on two more occasions
And both times we had heavenly vacations !

Kusadasi diaries : Clever Sunset Photoshoots

One of the things I read online before heading off to Kusadasi in Turkey last year was that the sunsets were rated as some of the most beautiful on the planet. Goodness knows who decided that or even how they could choose but I have to agree, they were pretty amazing.

The colours of the sun and then of the sky were quite amazing and the open air restaurant backed on to this view so we always watched the sun go down just as we tucked into dessert and before running off to the mini disco.

Every single person in the hotel had a play at getting a funny photo with the sunset at some point and it turned into a nightly game with us to get the perfect shot before the sun totally disappeared (which it does surprisingly quickly - ten minutes and it's all over).

The sun on the palm of my hand pose was the most popular.

Or there was the two-handed variation.

Getting the height absolutely right is actually quite difficult because you can't see the sun in the photo preview because it's too bright.

Sophie seemed to get the knack of judging exactly where to put her hand !

But even with clever poses, it's still stunning.

We've just booked to go back to the same hotel this summer so I've been idling browsing on internet for some new ideas for clever sunset photoshoots - I think we could have great fun trying out some of these poses this year !

Togally Blog has loads of great ideas

This one (found on Flickr) is very clever.

I've learnt that this technique is called "forced perspective" and if you google it, you'll find loads more fun ideas for getting quirky photos that look great fun to try out, with or without a sunset. Let me know if you've got any more ideas for us to play with this summer with the sunsets !
