Matchbox 60th Anniversary Die Cast Models review

It's hard to believe but Matchbox have been creating vehicles and playsets for six whole decades now - their first die cast models rolled off the factory conveyor belts way back in 1953. To commemorate the brand’s 60 year anniversary, Matchbox has released a collectible line of 24 vehicles, featuring some of the best-loved classic vehicle models, each of which comes with its own retro matchbox sized box.

We received a couple of the models to review - the Urban Tow Truck and the iconic Routemaster Double Decker Bus. The toys themselves are timeless, likely to appeal as much to little boys as their dads and grandads, but the boxes have a definite retro feel. I can see these becoming highly collectible in years to come so you may want to keep them in their original packaging, although it may be hard to keep them out of sticky little fingers !

Other models in the collection include the Austin FX4 London Taxi, the 64 Austin Mini Cooper, a Vintage Tractor, the 62 VW Beetle - all iconic models that even I would be able to name and I'm hopeless with car types !  - as well as a police car, ambulance, police bike, Aston Martin, Porsche ... If you bought the whole set (or even just selected models), it would be a great snapshot of the past half century of motorised vehicles.

The 60th Anniversary collection has a RRP of about £3.99 per model so they could be a nice idea for a Father's Day gift that would make many dads and grandads get all nostalgic for their childhood toys.

Matchbox fans can also view the 60th anniversary anthem video, which captures the spirit of the brand : unstoppable vehicles for heroic adventures at www.Matchbox.com/Heroes.
