Drumond Park Rapidough review

Drumond Park seem to have a real knack for coming up with original and fun games that the whole family can enjoy together. We've already reviewed Box of Shocks, LOGO What Am I?, Spin Mania and The Magic Tooth Fairy Game, all of which have received the Madhouse seal of approval, so we were over the moon to receive some more products from their range to review. First up was Rapidough. If you imagine a similar idea to charades or Pictionary but using modelling clay instead of mimes or drawings, you'll have a rough idea of the aim of the game.

The box contains two balls of modelling clay - one blue, one yellow, one colour for each team - as well as two mats for creating the models with minimum mess, two "plug cutters", two modelling tools and a box full of cards, telling you want you need to represent with your dough.

It's a fast-paced game with no boring waiting for your turn. Each team chooses one modeller for each round who go head to head, trying to recreate the word on their card with their modelling clay while the other team members try to guess it. The first team to find the word wins the round and gets to "steal" a plug of the opposite team's dough with the handy plug tool. (The girls love this part !) If you lose several times, you'll end up having to try to model something really complicated with a pea-sized amount of dough, which can be quite funny !

The only problem (for us) is thatyou need to have a minimum of four players to play it properly. Most of the time when we play board games, it's just me and the girls so we had to come up with a new way of playing that works with three people. Our version is, each ball of coloured dough is split into three and each player gets a ball of each colour. One player takes a card and makes the model while the other two players try to guess it. The first player to guess gets a plug of the modeller's clay. The winner is the person who ends up with all the clay (although we've never actually played long enough for this to happen so I don't know if it would actually ever work !).

Even with our tweaked version, we've been having a lot of fun, as you can see. Can you guess what Juliette has modelled here? No? It's Lego !

The game has apparently been reworked so that the word cards are more family-friendly. We haven't come across any that the girls didn't recognise or understand so far (and we've played quite a few times already !). It is aimed at players aged 8+ but you could always let younger children join in if you're working in a team.

The only very slight downside for us is, as I mentioned, that you need a minimum of four players to play it properly so we need to wait for Madhouse Daddy to be home from work (and not too tired to play) or for one of the girls' friends to come over. On the plus side, Juliette keeps getting it out to play by herself, practising making the models on the cards or just playing with the modelling dough, without worrying about the game at all !

If this sounds like your kind of game, don't go away - I have a giveaway coming right up where you can win one.

  2. My kids and I played this at my daughter's friends house, and we really enjoyed it. You don't have to be good at art, in fact the less "arty" sculptures are easier to guess. Lots of fun.
