When Happy got in touch to see if we'd like to try out their Kale Chips, I was unsure what we'd make of them. To be honest, they sounded far too healthy to be tasty ! The email explained that they are air-dried raw kale chips that are 100% natural, wheat free, dairy free, gluten free and nut free. They currently come in two flavours - BBQ and Carob Coconut, with two more savoury flavours in the pipeline.
When they arrived, their appearance did nothing to allay my doubts. They look like little pieces of broccoli - Pierre said "look, Tree Fu Tom trees" which is what he calls broccoli ! But I put some in my mouth, expecting the worst, and was pleasantly surprised. They don't have a "vegetable" taste at all, they just have a sweetness coming through for the carob coconut ones and a slight smoky flavour for the BBQ ones. I was surprised to see both the kids and the adults give them a thumbs up.
A 25g bag of carob coconut flavour contains 112 calories, 8.5g of carbs (of which 6.5g sugar) and 5.6g of fat, of which 2.9g saturates. For the BBQ variety, it's 120 calories, 4.2g of carbs (of which 4g sugar) and 7.7g of fat, of which 0.9g saturates. I was slightly surprised by the fat content, but was pleased to see that they are a source of omega 3 and 6, iron, magnesium, vitamins A & C, folic acid, amino acids and bioavailable calcium. They're high in fibre and the fact that they're air-dried means that they retain all of the goodness that nature intended.
If you want a healthier alternative to crisps, they're a good bet but you might have to blindfold your children to get them to try them the first time !
