Picture book review : Night Night, Woolly - Brian Jameson

The Madhouse Mini-testers love Woolly and Tig - you may remember they were very happy to review some Woolly and Tig toys earlier in the year - so they were over the moon to receive some Woolly and Tig books to review too. I'll be telling you about the activity book very soon, but first we settled down at bedtime with the Night Night, Woolly story book.

Pierre was instantly enthralled, reading along with his Woolly toy ! The book features photos rather than illustrations, making it instantly recognisable for fans of the TV programme.

The book takes a common childhood scenario that will really appeal to many young children - Tig is scared of the dark.

She is convinced that she has monsters in her bedroom, hiding in the dark, but Woolly comes to the rescue, pointing out that it is the shadow created by her new lamp and the fluffy sheep on her mobile.

The pair explore the concept and have great fun making Chinese lantern shapes on the wall, then scaring her parents with their own monster shadows !

It's a lovely story that will be very reassuring for any children who are scared of the dark and imagine their own monsters lurking in dark corners. At various points, the story asks you to examine feelings and emotions, looking at Tig's expression and deciding what she is thinking. This is also a great way of discussing feelings and trying to understand other people, as well as the world around us. Needless to say, we all had fun making shadows on the wall before going to sleep !

star rating : 5/5
