Deep Heat, Deep Freeze & Muscle Rescue review

If you follow me on twitter, you may have seen my cry of despair last week when I wandered upstairs to see if the washing machine had finished its cycle and discovered that the bath was half full of murky, stinky water. I think a sock must have got sucked out with the water and clogged up the pipe, which is the same one as for the bathwater. After two hours with a sink plunger, I eventually emerged victorious but later that evening, I had a really sore back and shoulder. Luckily, I remembered that I had some Deep Heat and Deep Freeze products waiting to be reviewed - perfect timing !

I opted for one of the Deep Freeze patches which, like the Deep Heat patches and Heat Rub, can be used for relieving the pain of sprains, strains and knocks to muscles and joints. Each box contains 4 single-use patches.

The patches are made of light cloth and remind me of big sticking plasters. You just apply them directly to skin. They do provide an instant cooling sensation that offers slight relief and soothes sore muscles.

The effects of the patch can be felt for up to three hours. I was slightly apprehensive of ripping off the patch, thinking it would feel like I was having my legs waxed or removing a particularly stubborn plaster, but in the end it was fine and came off easily with no pain whatsoever.

I'd also received some new products from the Deep Heat Muscle Rescue range to try out - a Bath Soak containing essential oils of rosemary and orange with electrolyte minerals , designed to ease everyday stress and muscular tension, and a Neck & Shoulder Cream, with a Rosemary & Vanilla Fragrance.

Having spent a large part of my day off doing battle with the bathtub, I didn't fancy heading back to the bathroom for a long soak, but I did have a sniff and it has a lovely zingy citrussy fragrance and a cheerful orange colour. I did manage to play my sympathy card and get a neck/shoulder rub with the cream which also helped, but I'm not sure if that was down to the cream or the massage itself ! The fragrance is pleasant but reminded me of Vicks Vapour Rub more than vanilla. There is a sponge applicator on the tube but you don't really need it and we bypassed it, squeezing it directly from the tube onto our fingers to rub it on the skin. I felt a definite warm glow that helped ease my aching muscles but not a vast amount of heat - each person is different though so you should apply sparing to begin with and add more if required.

For minor aches and pains, I'd definitely recommend keeping some in the cupboard, especially if you regularly do a lot of gardening or strenuous exercise. The Bath Soak sounds like an ideal weekly treat, when I have time for a long soak in the bath to relax and unwind.
