Picture book review : Hedgehugs - Lucy Tapper & Steve Wilson

Hedgehugs is a beautifully illustrated, fun tale that focuses on two loved-up hedgehogs, called Horace and Hattie. They're the very best of friends and want to hug all the time but when you're a hedgehog, hugs can be a very prickly affair.

The ingenious pair come up with all sorts of solutions to the problem, rolling in snow (too cold), hollow logs (too bumpy), dead leaves (too scratchy) and strawberries (too sticky). Pierre gasped when I turned to this page, thinking that the strawberry juice was blood and that they'd hurt themselves with their spikes !

They finally come up with the ideal solution though - a special hedgehug suit made out of an old sock ! The book suggests that next time you find an odd sock, you can suppose that a hedgehug has just taken place. This really appealed to Pierre because we have a whole bag of odd socks (hoping to be reunited with their lost pairs next time we have a big tidy-up !).

This is one of those books that makes you go awww when you read it and Pierre always wants to finish with a big cuddle to show that he isn't spiky ! There were also lots of giggles when we looked at the accompanying pictures, especially when Pierre spotted the bra and knickers on the washing line !
