Pixley Berries Cordial review

When Pixley Berries sent through a bottle of their Cranberry & Apple Cordial, I was keen to see what we'd think because it was a brand I'd never heard of. The bottle promises that it is "made with lashings of fruit" and isn't made from concentrate. I first tried it with cold water straight from the fridge. It's got a very fresh, quite tart taste that the kids found a bit too sharp so they preferred adding it to lemonade or mixing it with half and half water and orange juice.

The heritage of the drink is very impressive. It is a mixture of top notch cranberries from Edgewood Bog in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, pressed in the giant juicer on Pixley's farm in Herefordshire, then blended with Wye Valley apple juice and a dash of Pixley's own special blackcurrant, Pixley Black.

Mary Haddock, Pixley’s "flavour guru", adds, “The cranberry juice really is exceptional. We wanted to capture the dry characteristics of the cranberry, making it moreish, but not too sweet – the solution was to mix it with our English apple juice, which sweetened it just enough so as not to lose the character. We then added a dash of Pixley Black blackcurrant juice to enrich the blend to create a wonderful refreshing cordial – great with sparkling water or even a dash of Vodka or Gin.”

I love the idea of using it as an ingredient in grown-up cocktails but at the moment, I'm feeling decidedly grotty with a horrible cold that feels more like flu so I was more tempted by another serving idea - serving it with hot water. This was refreshing and helped soothe my sore throat.

As well as the Cranberry & Apple variety that we tried, Pixley Berries also comes in Blackcurrant and Blackcurrant & Raspberry flavours.
