Tilda Humara Mushroom Hakka review

Microwavable rice is a store cupboard staple here at The Madhouse. It's great when you need a quick meal on the table after a long day at work and it's also fab as a shortcut when making a rice-based dish such as stuffed peppers or nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice). We've got into a bit of a rut though - we always tend to buy Tilda Basmati (white and brown) or Uncle Ben's mushroom rice - so I was delighted to discover some new and slightly more exciting varieties in the hamper of Tilda (and Le Creuset) products that I won earlier in the year.

Today we tried the Tilda Humara Mushroom Hakka pouch. Tilda describe this as "a delicious blend of wholegrain basmati rice, mushroom, ginger and soy sauce steamed together to make this iconic Indo-Chinese recipe". The ginger and soy sauce only add a very delicate basenote - it's not at all spicy and it doesn't overpower the taste of what you're eating with it, which I was slightly worried about. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are only 161 calories in a half-pouch portion too.

We ate ours with some leftover barbecued ribs and pork belly which went really well. The whole Tilda Humara range has been made with healthy eating in mind, using wholegrain basmati rice with no one portion exceeding 170 calories. It is also gluten free, suitable for vegetarians and free from any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. I'll definitely be looking out for the other varieties to mix things up a bit - I've already reviewed the Tilda Humara Khichdi which is a mixture of rice and lentils that was very nice too.

  1. Will definitely give that a try! I'm a big fan of the microwave rice - especially the mushroom - but this does sound a bit more exciting! :)
