Our Little Secret Enticing Peshwari Makhani sauce review

Our Little Secret recently sent us through a selection of their Dine-In Cooking Sauces to try out. Going for a more high-end, gourmet experience, they move away from the rather boring and obvious choices like korma and rogan josh to offer such intriguing-sounding recipes as the Fiery Kadhai (dine-in cooking kit) and Temptuous Tikka Lababdar or Enticing Peshwari Makhani (dine-in sauces).

The Enticing Peshwari Makhani cooking sauce is the one that we tried out first. It's described as "a beautifully rich North Indian recipe made from fresh farm tomatoes, fresh cream and aromatic herbs & spices".

The whole range has a handy chilli rating on the front of the pack so that you can choose a recipe to suit your palate - this one has two out of three chillies and was already pretty hot so be prepared to add some extra cream to cool things down if necessary.

The nutritional information is also readily available at a glance. A 125g serving (that's a third of the pouch and is plenty) contains 210 calories, 4g of sugars, 18g of fat (of which 9g saturates) and 3g of salt. Plus the meat or vegetables and any extra cream you may want to add.

The packaging promises an effortless meal and that is exactly what you get. You just chop up the meat of your choice - I went for chicken but you could also use lamb, fish, prawns, pork or your favourite vegetables - fry it for a few minutes to brown it then add the sauce and leave to simmer for 20 minutes until fully cooked. I also decided to fry some onions before putting in the chicken because I love onions in everything ! It would also be a great way of giving leftover cooked meat/potatoes/vegetables a new lease of life - just throw all the leftovers in a pot and add the sauce.

Served with rice, this provided a quick but very tasty evening meal. I did stir in some clotted cream before serving to reduce the level of heat a bit. I would have liked some chunks of vegetables in there to make it seem more homemade but overall, it's not bad at all and seems much fresher than the usual jars of curry cooking sauce that you find on the supermarket shelves. If Indian cuisine isn't your thing, they also have Mediterranean and Oriental sauces available.

star rating : 4.5/5

RRP : £1.79 for the sauces, £3.29 for the kits.
