ROBOFish & My Magical Mermaid review

I may have mentioned this before but there are less than 100 days to Christmas - only 91 days now, in fact ! - so if you're organised, you'll be looking around for stocking filler ideas already. Zuru Toys have plenty of ideas up their sleeves and they sent us through a couple to try out.

ROBOFish was one that I'd already heard of - not surprising really, as it was  the fastest-selling toy of 2013 with over 20 million units sold globally - but I'd never seen one in action. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much - I have memories of the old-fashioned clockwork swimming fish that you had to wind up every two minutes - but ROBOFish is much more hi-tech. It is water-activated with carbon sensors so that as soon as you put it in the bath (or swimming pool - it can swim up to 8 feet deep !), it will start swimming and as soon as you take it out, it stops. (It also has an energy-saving feature that means it turns itself off after 4 minutes.) It comes with two button cell batteries already inserted and they even throw in two extras, which is a nice touch. It doesn't just swim in a straight line though - it uses aquatic robotics technology to replicate the characteristics of real fish, turning, diving, rocketing up, moving from side to side - you never know where it will go, making it all a bit more exciting. New for 2014 is the ROBOFish Pirate range, with six new designs available. (RRP £9.99 each so not bad as a stocking filler.)

We also got to discover a My Magical Mermaid, the new addition to the ROBOFish line. Again, it's just a case of dropping your mermaid into water and watching her instantly come to life. As well as the 2 (+ 2 extra) button cell batteries, she comes with three shiny rings of different weights that you can use to help her have the right buoyancy. By putting her arms in different positions, she will swim and dive in different ways. We (er, I mean the kids !) had great fun playing with her in the bath, but looking at the official trailer, it works even better with deeper water.

The ROBOFish bowl and the Magical Mermaid Water Wonderland, both of which can be bought separately, look like they really show off the toys to their full potential.

As you can see, we still had fun playing with them with just a few inches of water in the bath though !

If you head over to the Magical Mermaid and ROBOFish websites, there are free games and activities for the kids to play with.
