Picture book review : I Wish I'd Been Born A Unicorn - Rachel Lyon & Andrea Ringli

Maverick Arts Publishing recently sent us four lovely new picture books to discover. The first one we read was I Wish I'd Been Born A Unicorn by Rachel Lyon, with illustrations by Andrea Ringli. You may remember, I reviewed another of Rachel Lyon's books, The Cautionary Tale of the Childe of Hale, last year. (Click through to read that review.)

This story features a kind-hearted and fun-loving but rather dirty and smelly horse called Mucky. As he's a bit pongy, he hasn't got many friends so he wishes he could be a unicorn so that everyone would want to play with him. A helpful owl comes up with an idea to make his wish come true and recruits the other animals to put his plan into action.

A raincloud undoes all their hard work and they think that Mucky will be really sad, but he's actually over the moon to realise how much all the animals pulled together to help him and that they are all his true friends.

We loved the heartwarming tale about true friendship, the fun rhymes (I always love reading rhyming stories out loud at bedtime) and the cute, boldly coloured illustrations that really brought the story to life.
