London Diaries : Hanging out with the stars at Madame Tussaud's

As soon as I discovered (with a squeal of delight) that I'd won a family annual Merlin Pass earlier in the year, Sophie instantly knew that the one place she absolutely wanted to go to was Madame Tussaud's. Well, she finally got her wish last week on our fab weekend in London.

The huge attraction for Sophie (and Juliette) was getting up close to the models of her idols One Direction and - swoon - touching the clothes that really belong to them and that they have actually worn. I won't bore you with the photos again but you can see them here and you can see even more on Sophie's blog too.

I was more impressed at getting up close to George Clooney. Sophie pointed out that he's married now but I said that didn't matter, so am I ! She did say we made a nice couple though !!

Sophie posed with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

And The Beckhams. A handy tip if you're in London and love David Beckham - you can nip into the ticket office for the London Eye and there's another waxwork of him next to an advert for Madame Tussaud's where you can pose with him without paying a penny !

Madhouse Daddy found a fellow Frenchman, Jean Paul Gaultier.

Shrek with his squishy tummy got lots of cuddles.

Juliette was very impressed at the little Tinkerbell model.

Usain Bolt looks like he's doing Saturday Night Fever so Sophie joined him in his pose !

Mo Farrah was begging to be copied too !

And as for Johnny Wilkinson, what can I say? He was asking for it !

Pierre seemed to take a shine to Pele !

While Madhouse Daddy was more impressed with Goldenballs ! Why has he got so many different waxworks ?!

On to the Royals. I was amazed to see how skinny Princess Diana was.

Madhouse Daddy got up close to The Windsors.

And we all wondered why poor Harry had been booted out of the family group !

Pierre proves that he's ready to be an honorary Beatle.

Then we discovered that he's a Belieber - he held his hand, cuddled him, struck a pose and kept asking me to take more pictures with him ! I felt a bit sorry for poor old Justin Bieber actually - last time I visited Madame Tussaud's with the kids from school, he had the One Direction treatment and you had to queue up to get your photo taken with him by a professional photographer. This time, he was shoved in a corner and nobody paid any attention to him, apart from Pierre. How the mighty fall ! (I said the same about Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger - nobody was taking photos with them either.)

Sophie was busy snapping selfies left, right and centre.

Madhouse Daddy got "cheeky" with J-Lo !

While I was more serious and got in between two civil rights heroes, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King.

A quick visit to 10 Downing Street.

Followed by The Oval Office.

Madhouse Daddy braved the Scream! attraction (people touch you in the dark and grab your ankles as you walk through !) but I bypassed that and the Chamber of Horrors with the kids. We all went on the Spirit of London ride then headed to the Marvel Heroes section, where Sophie hung out on the ceiling with Spiderman !

I love the way Madame Tussaud's go out of their way to help you get a good photo, such as here, with the Wolverine claws.

Then it was off to the Marvels Superheroes 4D Experience - a short film with fab special effects (that did scare Pierre - he hid under his coat on my lap ! - but had us all laughing our heads off). You get vibrating seats, claws in the back of your seat, gusts of wind and water splashes when Hulk sneezes, amongst other things !

The funniest part of the visit for me had to be the queue to get in (incidentally, not long at all - only about 10 minutes on a Saturday lunchtime in November). As Sophie was getting excited about seeing One Direction, we mentioned it to the crowd control guy who said, with a wink that I was sure Sophie had seen, that they had just taken down the exhibit the night before. She totally fell for it so her face was a picture when she realised they were still there !
