Picture book review : The Four Little Pigs - Kimara Nye

When I plucked The Four Little Pigs off the bookshelf, Pierre was giggling before we'd even turned to the first page because of the picture on the cover of the little boy with a pig's snout !

We soon discovered that the little boy is called Tom and his granny is a witch. A very friendly and kind witch though, who responds to her grandson's complaint that her choice of bedtime story is boring by magicking him into the story.

Tom helps the three little pigs fend off the wolf so that he gives up and runs off to Red Riding Hood's house, but not to gobble her up - it's because she makes great cookies ! Pierre thought it was great fun to see the well-known and well-loved fairy stories transformed, while remaining recognisable with classic lines like "I'll huff and I'll puff ..." or "not by the hair on my chinny chin chin" that he could join in with.

The illustrations, by Marcin Bruchnalski, bring the story to life and Pierre loved looking at them as I read the story.

I don't know if this is a one off or whether Tom will be magicked into other fairy stories, but we'd love to see some more of his adventures. We thought it would be fun to see him take on the grumpy old troll in the Three (Four?) Billy Goat's Gruff or following Jack up the beanstalk.
