Picture book review : I Don't Want To Go Home - Sinéad Poznanski

I Don't Want To Go Home is a fun story about a little girl who wants to stay at the park and who tries to convince her mum to stay a bit longer by listing all the adventures they could have - catching butterflies, dancing to France, being pirates, going into space, taking a boat trip ...

It's all written in rhyme but sometimes seemed slightly stilted to me :
" Instead of home let's stay
and play in the park all day.
Catching butterflies in a net
I don't want to go home yet."
Unlike some books in rhyme, it didn't seem to flow quite naturally and I was wrong-footed a few times when reading it aloud. It could be down to the slightly haphazard punctuation. The Madhouse kids didn't seem to mind though !

The Madhouse kids loved looking at the brightly coloured illustrations but they found the ending a little abrupt - did they go home? did she fall asleep? did they really go on the boat instead of going home or was she pretending? All questions that Pierre asked when we turned the final page !

It's a lovely story though that perfectly encapsulates the essence of carefree childhood, wanting playtime to last forever. Pierre had fun copying the actions and pretending to be a dancer, spaceman and pirate as we turned the pages.
