Slappie Watch review

Pierre has suddenly taken a real interest in telling the time, not just using the digital alarm clocks and the time in the corner of the laptop screen but also using a "real" clock with hands. I have bought him watches before but they never seemed to last five minutes before the straps or clasps broke, probably because his little fingers found them clumsy to use and he was a bit too rough with them. When Peach Perfect got in touch to ask if I'd like to review something from their well-stocked online gift shop, I decided to see if they had watches - they did, and what's more, they had Slappie watches, in both child and adult sizes, which looked absolutely ideal.

As well as looking funky, Slappie Watches are also very functional and perfect for children or those with an active lifestyle. The strap is made of  a specially engineered steel spring encased in a high quality silicone strap so you just hold it on your wrist and "slap" the ends into place, with no need for fiddly clasps (and less things to break). This means that one size fits all (always good news with kids that seem to grow on a daily basis !) and, even better news, the straps are wipe clean, with no nooks and crannies for dirt to get lodged into. Best of all, if you ask Pierre, they make a hugely satisfying snap every time you wrap them around your wrist, which makes you want to do it again and again !

Nick Jenkins in the Dragon's Den was impressed by the concept and I knew that Pierre would love it, but I have to admit, I was slightly dubious about how well they would stay in place. Well, it turns out, my concerns were unfounded - Pierre's Slappie Watch has stayed firmly in place during a sweaty football match at the park, an energetic game of hide and seek and a half hour of putting it on and taking it off again because he likes the slap-click noise ! As for me, I love the fact that within a day of owning it, he had already mastered the art of properly telling the time, which is a great life skill to learn and one that many kids these days don't pick up (many of the 11-year-olds that I teach have no idea of how to tell the time without a digital watch or, more often, their phone !). Pierre was also impressed that after all his playing, he could even keep it on in the bath because it is water resistant to 30 metres.

Slappie Watches are available in several colours and sizes : Apple Green, Bermuda Blue or Pastel Pink in kid's size (£17); Minty Fresh, Neon Pink or Baby Black in small adult's size (£19); Red, Black or Navy in large adult's size (£22).

If you're looking for a Father's Day gift idea, look no further - you could even go for a mini-me matching watch set for father and son for extra cuteness !
