Madhouse recipe : Halloween Monster Rolls

Princes recently got in touch with a fun blogger challenge that I knew that Madhouse kids would love getting involved in - creating some scary monster rolls for Halloween with Princes Tuna. They sent us through two cute recipes to inspire us.

Princes Tasty Tuna Mini Beasts

Serves: 4
Preparation: Approx 15 minutes

Ingredients

8 slices of bread from a large, medium-cut loaf (white or wholemeal)
150g medium fat soft cheese
1 x 160g can Princes Sandwich Tuna, drained
¼ cucumber, thinly sliced
4 cherry tomatoes, sliced in half
2 radishes, sliced
12 raisins or sultanas

How to make it

1. Lightly toast the slices of bread. Use a large round cutter to stamp out circles from the slices of toast.
2. Spread the soft cheese over the toast circles. Top half of them with the tuna. Cut the remaining toast circles in half and arrange them on top of the tuna mixture to look like ‘wings’. Layer the cucumber slices on top.
3. Put two tomato slices on one end of each toast circle to look like ‘eyes’. Arrange the radish slices on top, then put a raisin or sultana onto each ‘eye’ with a third raisin or sultana below the eyes to look like a ‘nose’. Serve at once

Princes Tuna Monster Rolls

Serves: 4
Preparation: Approx 25 minutes

Ingredients

4 soft bread rolls
Butter, for spreading
A few curly lettuce leaves
1 x 160g can Princes Sandwich Tuna, drained
3 tbsp Greek-style natural yogurt
4 cheese slices
8 cherry tomatoes, halved
Salad cress or grated carrot

How to make it

1. Split the bread rolls in two, without cutting all the way through. Spread with butter and top with lettuce leaves.
2. Mix the Princes Sandwich Tuna with the yogurt and share between the rolls.
3. Cut each cheese slice in half with a zig-zag edge — just use a sharp knife or scissors to do this. Arrange in the rolls.
4. Position the cherry tomatoes on the rolls to resemble ‘eyes’. Top the rolls with salad cress or grated carrot to look like ‘hair’. Serve at once.

Here are our efforts. We made the filling with a tin of tuna, a small tin of sweetcorn, 1tbsp light mayonnaise, 4 cherry tomatoes, 5 slices of cucumber and 5 slices of gherkin, all chopped into small pieces and mixed together, with a pinch of salt, a shake of black onion seeds and some garlic granules. We used slices of cucumber and cherry tomato as eyes and a crinkle cut carrot stick for teeth !

From the angle that the photo was taken from, this one also looks like a face (it looks like a wolf to me), but it is actually a vampire butterfly, according to Pierre, and the halved cherry tomatoes are the eyes.

These would be great in packed lunches - they take barely more time to make than regular sandwiches and the embellishments are actually a great way of sneaking extra veggies in !

Disclosure : We received some Princes tuna, and a shopping voucher, in order to take part in the challenge.

    1. Definitely - it also helps if they are involved in putting it all together. I'm always amazed at how much salad and veg the Madhouse kids will pack in when making their own wraps and rolls !
