Book review : Piglettes - Clémentine Beauvais

It's hard enough becoming a teen, dealing with the crazy burst of hormones and growing into your new body, but being elected the winners of the cruel Pig Pageant - in other words, the ugliest girls in school - makes it even harder. Especially when the boy behind the cruel contest used to be your best friend.

Underdogs Mireille, Astrid and Hakima decide to take back the cruel jibe and reinvent it. Dubbing themselves The Three Piglettes, they head from their hometown of Bourg-en-Bresse to Paris by bike, selling handmade sausages along the way. They become a social media sensation and a national institution during their week-long trek. Their final destination is the Bastille Day presidential garden party, with each of the girls having their own personal reasons for wanting to go there.

It's a lovely coming-of-age novel with the underdogs having their moment of glory against all odds. Sadly, in most cases of cyber-bullying, things aren't quite so rosy, but it's a heartwarming, feel-good tale of girl (pedal) power that will frequently make you smile.

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade - or at least grow to love the bitter taste of lemons. It's not about winning but adapting your goals to find closure and acceptance. A great life lesson for us all, with a cast of enchantingly lovable characters.

  2. Lovely review. Thank you. I tend not to buy the older children books that I have chosen myself but this one looks very good.
