Schwartz review #1 : Creamy Mild Peppercorn Sauce

As I told you here, as well as coming up with a fabulously generous prize of a hamper for one of my blog-followers (that maisietoo was lucky enough to win here - oooh I'm so jealous !), Schwartz also sent me through a lovely selection of products to try out. First up in The Madhouse kitchen was this Creamy Mild Peppercorn Sauce.

You just add the contents of the sachet to 1/2 pint of milk - we used semi-skimmed but anything would do - and give it a good mix. You can see the whole green peppercorns bobbing about !

Bring it to the boil, stirring constantly, and it develops into a thick, luscious, creamy pepper sauce. If you want to, you can add a knob of butter. We did and it makes it extra glossy and rich.

And here you have it - lunch is served. A lovely plate of steak and crispy chips (from the Actifry, that we reviewed here) that looks just as good as the one that we often eat on a Friday lunchtime in a little restaurant in town.

I have to admit, it wasn't quite hot and peppery enough for me, but the girls loved it and usually they don't like pepper sauce so that's all just down to personal taste.  Each sachet makes enough for four generous servings and contains just 88 calories, plus whatever in the milk and optional butter, which is very reasonable for such a creamy, tasty sauce.

Schwartz say it's great with steak, chicken, sausages and pork and give a top tip on their website : For a quick Beef Stroganoff style recipe, pour the prepared sauce over pan-fried strips of beef and sliced mushrooms, cooked in a little brandy, and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Ideal served with rice. I might have to give that a try too.
