7th February is Safer Internet Day - NETGEAR advises Parental Control

In advance of Safer Internet Day (on 7th February), NETGEAR urges people to remember that in our increasingly connected homes, parental control should encompass all devices that are internet-enabled.

Rob Wells at NETGEAR, outlines the five golden rules for families in a connected home:

1. If it's connected to your home network, it's connected to the internet, and needs to be protected by parental control software. This includes computers (PCs and WiFi-connected laptops and tablets as well as WiFi-enabled smartphones.)

2. Think about all the internet-enabled devices you could have overlooked. Online games and entertainment are areas of growing risk to young people and mobile devices such as an iPod Touch should be protected by parental control software too.

3. Set parental controls sensibly and flexibly. Where possible opt for controls that can be set remotely, that can be personalised (for example in terms of access times or for each user) and that can be easily updated or amended.

4. Ensure your parental control protection covers guests' devices too so that computers or consoles brought into your home are immediately protected as well.

5. Listen and talk to your children. Ensure they understand how to use - and enjoy! - the internet safely, and try to agree the parental controls together.

NETGEAR delivers high performance home networking, storage and digital media products to connect people to the Internet. NETGEAR products are built on a variety of proven technologies such as wireless, Ethernet and Powerline, with a focus on reliability and ease-of-use.

  1. Very sensible advice. Children use the internet such a lot and it's useful to know their security is protected using parental controls and other software.
