Kelloggs Mini Max review

A little while ago, I saw a message go by on a bloggers' forum announcing that Kelloggs were looking for families who were prepared to roadtest one of their new breakfast cereals called Mini Max. I said that sure, we'd be up for it and sat back waiting for the postie to drop off a box. Well, when he did deliver it, there was not one box but TEN boxes! *Gulp* Hope everyone at The Madhouse likes it then !

I immediately opened a box to have a peek at what was inside and discovered what look like sugar-frosted mini Shredded Wheat. Imagine a cross between Shredded Wheat and Frosties and you'll have a pretty good idea. The great news is, this seems to be the perfect balance for everyone, however sweet they like their cereal. I don't like overly sweet "kids" cereal, preferring less sugary options like cornflakes and Fruit n Fibre. The kids, on the other hand, prefer all the really sugary options like Frosties, Honey Nut Loops and Sugar Puffs, for example. Well, Mini Max hit the spot for everyone in The Madhouse, kids and adults alike, which is great news if - like us - you always have an overstuffed cupboard trying to fit in everyone's favourite box of cereal.

We started off tasting the Mini Max as a quick snack, straight out of the pack, which is a bit dry if you eat too many but very pleasant if you just have a handful. You can really taste the sweetness of the sugar frosting perfectly complementing the wheaty, slightly savoury flavour of the cereal beneath. The kids loved them dry too which has to be a healthier option than crisps, biscuits or sweets. But we also tried them in a bowl with milk too and everyone liked them again. I love the fact that they retain a bit of firmness, rather than dissolving into mush.

I went to investigate the ingredients list and it isn't too bad : Shredded Wholewheat(86%), Sugar, Humectant (Sorbitol), Beef Gelatin, Vitamins & Minerals: Niacin, Iron, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B1 (Thiamin), Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12. I'm not surprised but slightly daunted by sugar being the second ingredient on the list and I'm sure I could have done without having beef gelatin in my breakfast  cereal but at least there are no E numbers.

Nutrition-wise, 100g contains 370 calories , 11g of protein, 73g of carbohydrates (of which 18g sugar and 55g starch), 3g of fat (of which 0.3g saturated) and 8g of fibre. Kelloggs say that one serving therefore contains a very reasonable 148 calories, 0.8g of fat and 7g of sugar.

This was for the original flavour but there is also a chocolate flavour available.

star rating : 4.5/5

RRP : £2.69 for 560g

Disclaimer : We received ten boxes of cereal in order to write the review, which I've been handing out to any friends and family who come visiting at The Madhouse !

  4. ive seen these advetised on tv, but until this review didnt know they were just like shredded wheat. only difference is the chocolate flavour. the only plus is the tv advert appeals to children. if these were on offer when i doing the cereal shop i would try them.

    1. They do do chocolate ones (which I quite fancy trying) but the ones we tried were "original"
