Sunday weigh-in : The Breakfast Experiment !

This week was Farmhouse Breakfast Week and I promised to "Shake Up Our Wake Up" and try out lots of new breakfast ideas. Now, I could have gone for healthy options - wholewheat toast, a bowl of Special K, smoothies or fresh fruit salad every day - but I decided to go the whole hog and not worry about the calories.

This was actually part of an experiment, not just me being a pig ! I usually skip breakfast. I know, I know, slap my wrists ! I won't let the kids leave the house without filling their tummies but I do on a regular basis - go figure ! I just don't feel hungry in the morning and am fully functional as soon as I get up so I just don't bother, half thinking that at least I'm saving calories for later in the day.

Whenever I sit in on the annual "healthy breakfast" campaign at work and hear the school nurse telling the kids that any calories you eat at breakfast are all burnt off by lunchtime, I always wonder if she's telling the truth, so this week was the time to find out. It was a week of delicious but definitely not diet-friendly breakfasts - fresh baked pain au chocolat, fresh baked croissants, peanut butter & banana muffins, cheese & bacon muffins, gingerbread porridge, bacon sandwich, pancakes drizzled with honey, ... I wouldn't eat like this every day but, in honour of Farmhouse Breakfast Week (and having been asked to blog about our breakfasts), I thought "well, why not?"!

Last week, I weighed in at 79.3kg. Last night, in the evening (ie when I'd be heavier than in the morning), I weighed myself out of interest and weighed 79.5kg so I figured I hadn't put any weight on at all (and may well have even lost some) by the time I did my official weigh-in this morning. I was therefore a bit gutted (not to mention confused) to weigh in at 79.7kg this morning, despite eating a healthy dinner of chicken breast, courgette , red pepper and tomatoes last night, topped off with a 1PP WeightWatchers yogurt ! Definitely nothing to make me put on weight overnight !

Oh well, I'll write it off as one of those nonsensical scales moments that leads the experts to say we should ditch the scales ! I was actually impressed that I could eat an extra meal each day - a very indulgent one at that - and not really put any weight on. Maybe I should make the extra effort to eat something each morning then, even if I don't feel particularly hungry.

Healthy choices wise, I'm very happy with my week. I only had time to do the Kardy-O-Funk DVD once this week, but I did spent an hour shovelling snow which was definitely great sport and another half an hour pulling the kids around on a makeshift sledge, which all definitely counts as sport too. Foodwise, apart from the breakfasts, it's all been pretty good - lots of chicken, vegetables and soup - so I'll say I'm happy with my week and ignore the scales !

  1. I've had the scales do that to me too, had a quick weigh in the night before, which wasn't too bad. Had nothing more to eat or drink, then woke up to find I've gained weight during the night! Maybe I must have been sleep-eating lol. I think scales can be strange like that sometimes.
Well done on the dvd and shovelling snow workout, something more that nothing, is something. xx
