Dove Compressed Deodorant review

How many times have you wandered down the supermarket aisle, picked up your usual product and tutted when you realise that the cheeky blighters have reduced the quantity but not the price? Well, if BzzAgent hadn't invited me to join in with their Dove Compressed campaign, I definitely would have done the same thing in the deodorants aisle. It turns out that Unilever, so that means Dove but also Vaseline and Sure, have changed their packaging so that the can is half the size but contains just as much product as the original larger size.

I was slightly dubious about how this could be but you can find out a lot more about the technology on the www.compresseddeodorants.com website. They explain :

"What does compressed mean?
We have compressed some of our 150ml deodorants into smaller 75ml cans. You get the same amount of protection you would get in a normal 150ml can in a little can half the size.

How does it work?
We’ve reengineered the spray system, reducing the amount of gas needed to deliver the same level of antiperspirant ingredient with each spray. This allows us to deliver at least the same sweat protection as the 150ml can but in a smaller 75ml can.

Does the 75ml can really last as long and work as well as the 150ml can?
Compressed technology has been extensively tested to make sure it will last just as long and work just as well as your regular 150ml deodorant. Use them just like normal and they will last just as long and work just as well."

I love the idea for two reasons. Firstly, it's more environmentally friendly on a number of levels - the packaging needs less resources, more can be transported at once so you reduce the carbon footprint and it means less volume in the landfills. Secondly, the smaller size makes it ideal for keeping in your handbag or packing in your suitcase, as well as leaving more room in your shopping bag on your way home from the supermarket.

Having used the original Dove deodorant before, I have to say it's just the same. It still contains 1/4 moisturising cream, has a lovely fresh scent and keeps me dry all day long. The only difference is the nozzle that squirts out less gas along with the deodorant.

Women have always said that size doesn't matter - it looks like Unilever may have just confirmed that !

I'm intrigued to see how long the can lasts for and if it really will last just as long as the original bigger can. Unilever are convinced that consumers will be impressed though because they have a totally-satisfied-or-your-money-back guarantee across the whole compressed range. (See their website below for more details.)

star rating : 4.5/5

  3. and a few months down the line they'll gradually switch back to the old dispense method having managed to halve what we get for the same price

  4. Tried it and it stinks (haha!). It doesn't last as long as the full size. It doesn't even last half.d as long. It lasts something like about a sixth as long. Absolute robbery.

  5. I am an overheated person and find the compressed deodorant feels less cool. also i got blocked sweat glands in my armpits from it. like small boils. so i think the texture is different. i only buy it for holidays for packing convenience
