Lana Granger knows what it's like to be a troubled child. She's been fighting her own demons since her happy, innocent childhood was brought to an abrupt end by watching her father burying her mother's battered body, so she doesn't shy away from the job of babysitting eleven-year-old Luke, even when she's warned about his behavioural problems and the controlling mindgames that he likes to play. The slightly creepy scavenger hunt that he dreams up seems harmless enough but then one of her college room mates goes missing and the clues seem to relate more and more to Lana's carefully hidden secret past. Is someone out to get her or is her own damaged mind playing tricks on her?
It's a totally gripping, tense, rollercoaster ride of a read that manages to keep you guessing right up until the end, not to mention reading way past your bedtime ! It relies on thrilling psychological suspense rather than horror or violence and is really well written, with all the loose ends being carefully tied together for a satisfying conclusion. The characters are complex and believable, which makes it even more chilling. I couldn't wait to get to the end but now that I have, I'm almost disappointed because I know it will be tough finding something equally exciting to read next !
