Even though it has become much more popular in recent years, sushi seems to be a real Marmite food, with people either loving or hating it. If the idea of eating raw fish still puts you off, Tesco's new range of sushi may appeal to you - there's not a piece of raw fish in sight !
I was actually really surprised to see the wide variety on offer. As well as the more traditional sushi containing smoked or cooked fish, there are also duck, chicken and veggie options. If you're still not convinced, Tesco has taken it one step further by introducing the first ever ‘nori-free’ sushi packs, in which the black seaweed usually used in sushi has been replaced with a range of Origami Wraps made from fruit and vegetables. They're all free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives, as well as being gluten free and low in calories. What more could you ask for?!
We received some vouchers to try out the range and the first one that caught our eye was the Tesco Limited Edition Salmon 3 Ways pack. It contains three types of bite-sized Salmon Hosomakis :
• Poached Salmon in Dill mayonnaise with a Lemon Origami Wrap
• Smoked salmon in a Carrot Origami Wrap
• Smoked Salmon with sweet chilli in a Pomegranate Origami Wrap
I have to admit, I'm usually not a huge sushi fan - the first time I tried some, I removed 50% of my taste buds with an overly generous smear of wasabi and wasn't keen on the texture of the seaweed - so these fruit and veg wraps are a lot more palatable to me, even if I'm sure they'll have the traditionalists gnashing their teeth !
The Salmon and Veg Sushi Snack looks like a very cute packed lunch option because it looks just like a little sandwich ! It contains :
• Smoked Salmon Sushi Rice “sandwiches” - miniature sized “sandwiches” made from rice and smoked salmon
• Bite sized vegetable and rice balls – made with sweet potato, red pepper and herbs
Madhouse Daddy liked the look of the Hoisin Duck pack which contains 2 Hoi Sin Duck & Cucumber California Rolls, 2 Cucumber Hosomaki, 1 Hoi sin Duck Hosomaki and Soy Sauce. It's only a small pack - 87g - but it's part of the Pick & Mix range which are on offer for 2 for £2 at the moment so you could grab a couple for lunch. The whole pack contains 150 calories and 3g of fat, of which 1g saturates, making them a great option if you're trying to watch your waistline.
Despite being a meat eater, I liked the look of the veggie option too - 1 Vegetable Medley California Roll with a White Sesame Seed coating, 1 Egg, Carrot and Edamame Bean California Roll with a White Sesame Seed coating, 2 Yellow Pepper Hosomaki, 1 Red Cabbage Hosomaki and a bottle of Soy Sauce. All of that for a grand total of 135 calories and because you've got lots of little bits to eat, it fools your brain into thinking you've eaten loads !
There are bigger packs available, such as the 206g Fish Variety pack or the 189g Mixed Sushi selection, which might be a nice idea for a romantic meal in for Valentine's Day. If you usually avoid sushi becase you don't like the taste or the idea, they're definitely worth trying out.
Disclosure : We received some vouchers for the product, in order to write an honest review.
