Revell Summer Action Rocket Star review

You may remember a few weeks ago, we reviewed the Revell Summer Action Color Glider, which provided a fun family craft session before heading off out to fly it. That wasn't all the outdoor fun that we had in store thanks to Revell though - they also sent us through a Rocket Star rocket launcher to try out.

I must admit, we were slightly underwhelmed when we took it out of the box - the rockets weren't as big as we expected and they're made of very light foam so I couldn't see them getting anywhere near the 15m height promised on the box. There was only one way to find out though so we headed off outside to have a go.

It's very easy to set up. You attach the foot pump to the tube on the launcher and position the rocket on top. The launcher base is made of flimsy foam and we found it had a tendency to fall or lean over, making it impossible to get a vertical launch. This could be solved by wedging the base in a crack in the pavement or putting something heavy on it to hold it in place - in our later attempts, one (brave !) person put their foot on it to hold it in place while someone else jumped on the pump.

The recommended age range on the box is 8+ but 5-year-old Pierre wanted to have a try too and he managed reasonably successfully, especially if he took a running jump.

If you want to get the rocket flying up to dizzying heights, you really need a grown-up to jump on it though - the heavier the better ! This provided much entertainment for the grown-ups who were giggling as much as the kids, trying to get it higher and higher in the air ! It's great fun and also pretty good exercise too !

It provided a lot of summer entertainment and is definitely a toy that we will continue to play with. The only pre-requisites are a flat, hard surface (concrete is ideal) and a calm day without too much wind. My only niggles were the overly light launcher which didn't stand up properly (it needs bulking up or weighting down) and the crazy amount of instructions sheets in half a dozen languages in the box. I don't think you really need an instruction sheet at all, let alone in so many languages, so it's a total waste of paper.
