All three of the Madhouse kids love and have always loved reading so we have shelves overflowing with books in each of their bedrooms. When I was given the chance to review some books from the Shine-A-Light series, I was intrigued though, as it was a concept I'd never heard of.
Similar to flap books, each page has some hidden content that can't be viewed when you turn the page. Rather than lifting a flap though, you need to shine light through the page - either with a torch or using the light from the window or a lightbulb - for the hidden pictures to be revealed.
This page for example, from the On The Plane book, shows the luggage going through the X-ray machine.
When the page is flat, the monitor is blank.
But when you shine a light through it, the hidden pictures magically appear.
Even as a grown-up, I was impressed but I soon discovered how it works - the hidden picture is on the back of the page and comes through in silhouette form when you shine through a light. Whoever came up with the concept is an absolute genius !
Pierre was fascinated, both by the "magic" pictures and the texts, with one book revealing what goes on in airports and on planes as they get ready for takeoff and the other describing life on a space station. Both really interesting, even for grown-ups.
This whole series had passed below our radar but there are lots of titles available, which I will certainly be investigating :
Secrets of the Vegetable Garden
Secrets of the Seashore
Secrets of the Apple Tree
Secrets of the Rainforest
Secrets of Winter
On The Train
On The Construction Site
(plus the two that we received which have just been released- On The Plane and On The Space Station)
