DVD review : Jumanji - The Next Level

Watching films as a family has turned into a regular occurrence since we've been on lockdown, so finding a new family-friendly adventure to watch all together is great news. Jumanji : The Next Level, which is released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on April 13th but also (possibly more usefully at the moment !) available on Digital since April 4th, fits the bill perfectly.

You may want to catch up with the past Jumanji films before watching. (It's not as if time is short right now !) The original Jumanji movie, starring Robin Williams, dates back to 1996 and shows two youngsters finding the board game Jumanji in their new house. As they start to play, unleashing wild animals and other scary things, they meet up with Alan Parish (played by Robin Williams), a grown man who has been trapped in the game since he was twelve years old. The updated version in 2017, Jumanji : Welcome to the Jungle, brought a modern twist to the original story, showing four teenagers in a detention centre discovering the old Jumanji game on a video console and being sucked into the jungle as their avatars.

This new movie, Jumanji The Next Level, brings back the popular actors from the last movie - Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan - and adds newcomers Awkwafina, Rory McCann, Danny Glover and Danny DeVito to the cast.

The film picks up with Spencer, Fridge, Martha and Bethany three years after their first adventure in Jumanji’s mystical video game world. When Spencer goes missing inside the game ahead of the group’s planned reunion from college, his friends, along with his grandfather (Danny DeVito) and his grandfather’s friend (Danny Glover), once again inhabit the avatars of Dr. Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart), Professor Sheldon Oberon (Jack Black) and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan) to rescue him. As they return to Jumanji, they discover that nothing is as they expect. With more action and surprises, the players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape.

It's a great movie to watch, for both teenagers and adults alike, and it had us chuckling on many occasions. The bonus materials, including a gag reel, several behind-the-scenes featurettes, in-depth scene breakdowns and a brand new jingle, are worth a look too.

The film has a runtime of approximately 123 mins and is rated 12 for adventure action, suggestive content and some language. 

DVD review : Hotel Mumbai

Last week, it was the school holidays, not just for the kids but for me too - the biggest advantage of being a teacher, in my opinion ! This gave me a chance to unwind and finally catch up on watching the latest DVDs that I'd received to review. After getting up to speed with the latest stories from Downton Abbey, I went for a complete change and switched to Hotel Mumbai.

This DVD tells the tense story of the Mumbai terrorist attacks, which took place on 28th November 2008, a day which saw the bustling Indian metropolis descend into chaos. Inspired by the stories of the survivors, the film follows the events at the iconic Taj Palace Hotel in the heart of the city's tourist district, where guests and staff became trapped in a heroic day-long fight for survival.

As I've just booked this year's summer holiday, we've been looking through numerous travel brochures, and the scenes in the luxurious hotel really made me realise that terrorist attacks can happen anywhere, at the most unexpected moments. The film features a large cast of characters, many of whom come through as selfless heroes, willing to put their lives on the line to try to protect their fellow holiday-makers and guests. They all seem perfectly ordinary, just like the people we meet every year on holiday, but many of them, from young parents to the hotel staff, have a story that turn them into everyday heroes.

It's an emotional film that will have your nerves on edge as the events unfold, leaving you celebrating the selflessness of the heroes in the midst of such terrible conditions. The violence and cat-and-mouse action will have you on the edge of your seat and really help you to understand what went on in Mumbai on that fateful day.

Hotel Mumbai is available on Digital, Blu Ray and DVD from 27th January 2020.

DVD review : Downton Abbey - The Movie

I was a bit of a late-comer to the world of Downton Abbey. I didn't watch it at all when it was on TV, but, after seeing all my friends oohing and aahing about all the stories on their social media accounts, I was intrigued so I gave in and bought myself a DVD boxset last year. I was instantly enchanted, catching up with all the upstairs-downstairs drama, and when I came to the end, I was lost. What would I use to fill my evenings ? 

Last month, I was delighted to be welcomed back inside Downton Abbey with the DVD release of Downton Abbey : The Movie, a sumptuous visit to catch up with all the latest goings-on of the original cast. The story picks up one year after the end of the series and the Crawley family and their intrepid staff have a new moment of excitement and stress to deal with : an impending visit from the Royal Family !

As you may expect, there is scandal, romance and intrigue that will leave the future of Downton hanging in the balance. I loved watching the much-loved family members, in particular my favourite, Violet Crawley, the matriarch of the family, with her witty one-liners, as they got to grips with their royal guests. Things are even more stressful in the servants' quarters and the kitchens, as they struggle to put on the best show of their lives.

Downton Abbey - The Movie is available on Digital from 13th January and Blu-ray and DVD from 27th January, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Get ready for Playmobil : The Movie !

This week, the postman dropped us off a fabulous bundle of goodies to celebrate the release of Playmobil : The Movie on DVD. 

This animated action adventure follows a trio of fun characters caught up in an exciting adventure that is sure to appeal to all kids. When her younger brother Charlie unexpectedly disappears into the magical, animated universe of Playmobil, unprepared Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy) must go on a quest of a lifetime to bring him home. Through their vibrant adventure, tracking down the villainous Emperor Maximus, Marla and Charlie realise that no matter how life plays out, you can achieve anything when you believe in yourself.

We received a fabulous package of accompanying merchandise, some of which has been sneaked away to reappear in Christmas stockings very soon !

I love the Playmobil figures with all their detailed accessories and I may have to pinch the Rex Dasher keyring myself !

The T-shirt is definitely more Pierre's size though.

 And the sticker book is sure to be a big hit too. We haven't collected stickers for ages, so I am sure Pierre will love it.

Looking outside at the wind and rain, I'm actually thinking this weekend may be calling for a DVD day, all sitting under a blanket tucked up in onesies, nibbling on a bowl of popcorn. Sounds like bliss !

Did you, and maybe your children, enjoy watching the TV series Merlin when it was on TV a few years ago? Or maybe your kids have delved into the Legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in book form? Either way, they're sure to enjoy watching The Kid Who Would Be King, which has recently been released on dvd.

The film is set in a modern backdrop where Alex, a teenage schoolboy, is constantly getting bullied and told what to do by his teachers. He certainly doesn't appear to be a hero and he thinks he’s just another nobody, until one day, he stumbles upon the mythical Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Luckily, help is at hand, in the form of the legendary wizard Merlin (who is nothing like his usual elderly wizard representation !).

Alex must find the inner strength to unite his friends and school yard enemies into an allied band of knights to defeat the wicked enchantress Morgana. With the future at stake, he must become the great leader he never dreamed he could be and save the world.

It's a lovely, child-friendly version of the story which is a clever blend of traditional legend and modern adaptation. Alex doesn't seem particularly heroic at the start of the film and it is lovely to see him, and his knights, building their confidence and overcoming their enemies. I had a giggle at the modern overhaul (the round table, for example, is a normal dining table with drop down extensions !) and the story of the underdog overcoming his personal issues to become a hero was heartwarming. Perfect family viewing for the summer holidays !

DVD review : How To Train Your Dragon - The Hidden World

Today is a very special day as it sees the release on DVD, Blu Ray and 4K Ultra HD of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, a film that comes almost ten years after the first movie wowed audiences around the world. What were you doing ten years ago ? Can you even remember ?! I was dealing with a litter of crazy puppies and was just weeks away from giving birth to Pierre. I was also just starting to write this blog - how time flies !

This new film is the final quest from Dean DeBlois and has been hailed as “the perfect conclusion to one of the best animated trilogies of all time”. It certainly has a lot to live up to ... but it does manage to provide the perfect, fitting end to the series.

What began as an unlikely friendship between an adolescent Viking and a fearsome Night Fury dragon has become an epic trilogy spanning their lives. This final installment will finally see the heroic pair fulfill their destinies, with Hiccup as the village chief and ruler of Berk alongside Astrid and Toothless as the dragon leader of his own kind. However, the dragons and Vikings of Berk are to face their darkest threat yet, the evil Grimmel, and Toothless discovers his soulmate, Light Fury. The bonds of Hiccup and Toothless' friendship will be tested like never before.

Giveaway #721 : Win Instant Family on dvd - closed - winner Champaklal Lad

Next week (10th June, to be precise) sees Paramount Home Media Distribution's release of the heart-warming, family-focused movie Instant Family on Blu-ray, DVD and Download & Keep.

The film features Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne as married couple Pete and Ellie Wagner who become the brand new parents of ... a complete family ! Following on from a few comments from their family members, they decide, somewhat half-heartedly at first, to look into the possibility of adopting or fostering a child. They attend an event to introduce foster children to prospective parents and find themselves won over by teenager Lizzy. However, they soon discover that their perfect foster child comes with two other younger siblings, Juan and Lita. In for a penny, in for a pound ! ...

Speeding from zero to three kids overnight brings more than its fair share of problems. While the younger children adapt to their new situation without too many problems, things are always tougher with a teenager in tow ! I could relate to and laugh along with many of the situations presented, so I was unsurprised to learn that  writer/director Sean Anders' real-life family served as the inspiration for the film.

The film shows the good and bad sides of being a foster family, with all the regular parental angst along with the extra drama of never knowing whether the kids will be taken away and returned to their real parents. It has a 12 rating due to some of the content related to parenting a teen, but there's nothing overly shocking in there and it's all quite funny and light-hearted.

On Download & Keep and Blu-ray, the film comes loaded with more than an hour of laugh-out-loud and uplifting bonus material. Go behind the scenes and see how the cast and crew brought the story to life, meet writer/director Sean Anders' real-life family and watch hysterical deleted and extended scenes and an uproarious gag reel.
