Madhouse diaries : A Zoo-per day out !

I can tell we've been packing a lot into the holidays because I can't keep up with blogging about our family fun ! As I mentioned at the start of the week, one of our geocaching adventures took us to the zoo in Fort Mardyck. For the holidays, they were offering free guided tours so I thought it could be quite interesting to pop in and find out more about some of the animals.

We started off with the marmosets. We've been to this little zoo countless times and rarely see the marmosets because they hide at the back in their house. Today, one of the keepers went round the cage dotting a honey mixture all over various areas and they all came out, much to the kids' delight.

Pierre was particularly taken with their Spiderman antics, climbing across the roof of the cage upside down !

Next stop, the big walk-through aviary where we saw some storks patiently sitting on their eggs waiting for them to hatch. They should be ready to hatch in about a week or two but apparently, even then, you wouldn't see them for a while because baby storks are black and they stay in the bottom of the deep nests so that birds of prey won't spot them.

The vultures looked quite cute and cuddly, contrary to the way we usually think of vultures as evil, ruthless beasts waiting for things to die !

This bird - not sure what it is, it was in the vultures' enclosure but it didn't really look like a vulture - was very interested in us and came hopping over to the fence, following us along as we walked away !

As always, the bears were a big attraction.

We learnt that because the zoo feeds them all year round, they dont hibernate and because they don't hibernate, despite mating every year, the female bear never falls pregnant.

But this is a good thing because bears are solitary animals and, although these two tolerate cohabiting, the male would almost definitely not accept having another bear in "his" territory. Female bears are apparently single mothers in the wild, bringing up their cubs on their own.

I must admit, I may have had a juvenile snigger at the latin name of these squirrels.

Pierre excitedly spotted Santa's reindeer - "the real ones", because Santa came to the zoo at Christmas to see them. We didn't see them fly though - believe me, Pierre had a good look !

I admired the stunning colours of the regal-looking peacock.

We looked at some smooth-shelled tortoises, then Juliette read the sign and said that the next enclosure was for "horny"-shelled tortoises. Cue more stifled sniggers !

We saw some very affectionate goats who came over to be stroked.

Then we were stunned to see the otters outside. Normally, the best we get is a grainy black and white picture on a TV-screen from the camera inside their hut.

Not to be outdone, the beaver came out to say hello. I didn't realise how big they are.

The keeper explained that they can carry two apples in their mouth at once then swim back to their foodstore. Just as she said it, he did a quick demonstration !

Forget Fifty Shades of Grey, the flamingoes offered fifty shades of pink !

Not to be outdone by the storks, the pelicans have been busy building nests and laying eggs too.

A horrified triple squeal (from all three of the Madhouse kids) heralded feeding time for the owls !

And we finished off with a visit to the seals. From the surface ...

... and underneath.

Pierre said bye bye and the seal seemed to wave goodbye back !

Time for a quick family photo - Sophie set this up so that it looks like a One Direction picture apparently ! - and we were off for the rest of our geocaching adventure.

Zico Chocolate Coconut Water review

I've discovered that an important part of geocaching is refreshments. We've been walking miles this week, literally - 6 miles on Monday, another 6 miles on Tuesday and just over 3 miles yesterday - and, while the kids are happy covering long distances, I do like to pack lots of snacks and drinks to keep us going. One of the things we took was this bottle of Zico Chocolate Coconut Water that had arrived in January's Degustabox. It's been lingering in the fridge ever since, feeling slightly unloved !

I think nobody really knew what to expect so they avoided it but when we actually tried it, it turned out to be a very nice, refreshing drink. Sophie took the first sip and said it wasn't very nice, then she gave the bottle a shake, tried again and said that actually, it was really nice. I encouraged her by saying that coconut water is big news for all the stars who have adopted it as the on-trend healthy drink, so she excitedly speculated that she must be drinking the same thing as One Direction !

Zico Chocolate is made from 85% coconut water (from concentrate) and a natural chocolate flavour. It is low calorie, containing half the calories and sugar of the leading chocolate milk brands, and has great hydrating qualities and lots of electrolytes, so it was perfect for us to take on our long walk. It's not as sweet and full-on chocolatey as kid-oriented chocolate milk but they still deemed it palatable and it has to be a healthier option.

The ingredients list is reassuringly short and free of hidden nasties - 100% natural coconut water from concentrate, cane sugar, coconut cream, cocoa, natural flavour, carrageenan. (I'd never heard of carrageenan but a quick google search revealed that it is an extract from red seaweed that is used for its gelling and thickening properties.) The whole 400ml bottle contains 80 calories, 0.8g of fat and 14g of sugars.

The kids enjoyed drinking it, likening it to a watered down version of chocolate milk, but it is also good as a sports drink, because it contains magnesium, which helps reduce tiredness, and potassium, to help maintain muscle function.

Globe-cooking recipe (South Africa) : Mild Curried Butternut Squash Soup

One of the recipes in this month's South African-themed Kitchen Trotter box was for Mild Curried Butternut Squash Soup. It's not really the right season for butternut squash at the moment so I haven't been able to make it so far. When I saw some at the farmers' market last week, I snapped them up and we made the soup today. It's really thick, creamy and warming - perfect for a quick dinner after an afternoon geocaching in the rain !

Mild Curried Butternut Squash Soup

ingredients :

1 butternut squash (I used two small ones)
500ml milk
salt, pepper
2tbsp Durban Curry mix (or any mild curry mix)
a knob of butter
extra seasoning to taste : I added black onion seeds, onion salt and smoked paprika

Peel the butternut squash, chop it in half, remove the seeds and chop it into large chunks.

Throw it in a large pot with the milk and spices. Cook for about 30 minutes until the butternut squash is soft and cooked. (Keep an eye on it, the milk may rise up quickly !)

Turn off the heat and use a stick blender to whizz it into a smooth puree. Adjust the seasoning, add a knob of butter and dilute with extra milk if it's too thick.

Inspiration(s) and Competitions from Birds Eye #Birdseyebloggers

To welcome me to the team of  #Birdseyebloggers, Birds Eye recently sent me through a little goodie pack including this lovely hardbacked journal and pen. They suggested using it for jotting down any recipes that inspired me, but we had other ideas - it's been made into our geocaching journal for writing down the coordinates and hints and logging our finds. (If you haven't been following our geocaching adventures, you can see what we've been getting up to by clicking on the geocaching tag.)

They also sent us through some vouchers so we decided to try out their latest product range, called Inspirations. Described as "chicken bursting with an irresistible sauce", they come in four varieties - Garlic & Herb, Chicken & Ham, Tomato & Basil and Peri Peri.

We tried the first two and they were very nice. The Garlic & Herb ones reminded me of chicken kievs and the kids loved the mild, smooth flavour of the cheese & ham ones. Served with a baked potato and salad, they made a fuss-free lunch - I literally put them in the oven on a baking tray with the potatoes for 1/2 hour and lunch was ready to serve ! (I zapped the potatoes in the microwave for 15 minutes so they softened up, before finishing them off in the oven to get crispy skins and the lovely fluffy texture that you just can't get when you microwave them.) Each 125g portion contains 310 calories and 17g of fat (of which 4g saturates) for the Garlic & Herb and 295 calories and 15g of fat (of which 2.6g saturates) for the Cheese & Ham. As you can see from the pack shot, they are currently on a Try Me Free offer until the end of June (send them the "try me free" logo and the receipt and tell them what you think of them for a full refund). Their other new product line is Fish Chargrills which sound interesting, so I'll have to look out for those next time.

To celebrate the launch of Inspirations, Birds Eye are launching The Picture House, where they will be introducing the world’s first Instagram restaurant where diners pay by photo. They are running an Instagram competition to provide a platform to share inspiring food images with the Birds Eye community, showing off inspiring evening meals you have created yourself or with the family. You just need to upload the image onto Instagram using the hashtag #BirdsEyeInspirations, making sure it is as creative, colourful and original as possible, and you could win a space at The Picture House restaurant on May 14th, a photography session with a top Foodie Instagrammer to help you learn how to take some AMAZING food photos plus a Samsung Galaxy Camera. Get snapping ! For more details, go to http://picturehouse.birdseye.co.uk/

While you've got your camera at the ready, you might like to hear about another exciting photo competition from Birds Eye, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for members of the public to be photographed by world renowned photographer, Martin Parr. Martin will travel the country documenting real people who depict the typical, modern eating habits in Britain and three of those lucky subjects will be selected via entries submitted on birdseyeview.birdseye.co.uk.  (I wonder what they'd think of our chip-butties-in-a-Hello-Kitty-tent-on-the-beach moment of madness that you can see above !) Martin’s new photographic project is a part of wider study looking into the nation’s eating habits – The Big Mealtime Audit – and will culminate in an exhibition showcased in London in September. All you need to do to enter the competition is take a photo of your family/friends at dinner time - this could be as fun or as crazy as you like - then upload your photo and a short description about why you think your photograph represents modern dining. The winner’s photo will be featured in an exhibition for press and media.

Wow, there's certainly lots going on at Birds Eye at the moment !

How to get the kids in on the spring cleaning !

Spring has sprung which means spring cleaning is definitely on the cards. To mark the occasion, Swiffer sent us a box full of dusters to tidy up the Madhouse and share with our friends and family.

That's a LOT of dusters !

Our mission was to test the XXL duster which has a handle that is 90cm long, making it ideal for getting into those hard to reach areas like the corners of the ceiling, behind the TV or right under the bed.

I never think Swiffer dusters look very impressive when I take them out of the box and I'm always a bit dubious about how well they will work - until I actually start using them that is. You need to give them a quick shake to separate the different layers and let the Swiffer magic begin !

The handle just slides into the slots on the back of the duster and you're ready to start.

Now this is where I made an incredible - in fact, I'd almost go so far as to say life-changing ! - discovery. The kids think that using the Swiffers are great fun and beg to have a go !

Pierre dusted off the TV while Juliette ran around picking up the dust bunnies lurking behind various doors.

They almost had a stand-up fight over who'd get to dust the mirror ! I pointed out that there was no need to fight, I could find a million places for them clean !

Pierre decided to go crawling under the beds on a dust-bunny hunt and proudly came back to show the results of all his hard work. Yuck !

They decided to have a competition and see who could get the most, then had great fun going outside to shake out the dust, hair (of the human and dog variety) and fluff ! I love the fact that it grabs all the dust like a magnet, locking it in rather than sending it flying around the room, which is what happens with a normal duster. It's all down to the unique multilayer system and the long curly fibres within each layer, covered in mineral oil to grab hold of the dust, apparently.

Meanwhile Sophie tried out the XXL model, tackling the cobwebs in the corners that I hadn't been able to reach with my usual cleaning supplies.

It's great for reaching behind furniture or anywhere that's inaccessible.

It's an amazing product that gets top marks from me, not just because it's so effective at getting rid of dust and hair but also because it makes the kids enjoy helping with the housework !

I've just translated this from a review on my French blog and it appears you can't get Swiffers in England any more ? I'm sure I used to buy them there ?!

Tesco Ingredients Tandoori Style Yogurt Marinade review

We've been trying out some of Tesco's chilled ingredients - I'll be telling you about the whole range very soon when we've tried out everything we have - and this week we discovered the Tandoori  Style Yogurt Marinade. The packs contain two pots, a Tandoori paste and some yogurt.

The on pack instructions suggest using this to marinade raw chicken before threading it onto skewers and grilling it on a barbecue or in the oven. I had some leftover cooked chicken from the Sunday roast to use up though so I cooked up a couple of onions, added the chopped chicken and stirred in the tandoori paste.

When the chicken was thoroughly warmed through, I poured in the contents of the yogurt pot and within a few minutes, I had tasty tandoori-style chicken ready to serve.

The yogurt takes the heat out of the tandoori paste so the result is quite mild. Even if I didn't leave the meat to marinade, the dish was packed with flavour.

This is a great way of jazzing up your leftovers, reducing food waste and also saving you some pennies. Our Sunday roast this week has created five meals. We had friends over for lunch so cooked two chickens with roast baby potatoes and veg. After picking the carcasses clean, I used some of the leftover meat to create Japchae and the rest with this tandoori style marinade. The carcasses went into a pot to make a fabulous Chicken & Vegetable Soup which was enough for two meals. How's that for frugal cooking?!

The Tandoori  Style Yogurt Marinade is actually lower on the calories than I expected - half a pot contains 94 calories and 4.8g of fat, of which 1.6g saturates - so it's a lighter option than many curry sauces. The whole range is currently on 2 for £2 which is great value too.

RRP : 2 for £2 (normally £1.50)
