Giveaway #717 : Win What Are You Looking At? book - closed - winner Katie Skeoch

What Are You Looking At? is a great book for kids as it has instant visual appeal that will keep them turning the pages, even if they're not keen on reading. It reveals some of the cutest, creepiest or just plain weirdest creatures for them to marvel over.

The photography is an intriguing mix of close-ups and strange angles of weird and wonderful creatures that you've probably never heard of before.

Pierre kept coming over to me in the kitchen saying "oooh look Mum", sharing his new discoveries with me !

His favourite creature was the space pig, because he thought it looked just like a made-up inhabitant of a video game !

From Pink Fairy Armadillos to Blob Fish, Star-Nosed Moles to Goblin Sharks, it's fascinating to see some of the little-known wildlife that inhabits the earth.

Untamed Dragons and Untamed Mad Lab Minis review

Whether you have a son or a daughter, if they like dragons, they're bound to be won over by the Untamed Dragons and Untamed Mad Lab Minis toys that we've been reviewing this week.

The Untamed Dragon is a funky new addition to the Fingerlings range, which already includes everything from monkeys and elephants to narwhals and unicorns. There are a whole range of dragons available, including the blue one with red wings called Shockwave that we received. He sits comfortably on a child's (or even a grown-up's) hand and will gaily blink, move his head and growl at you.

They come with 4 x LR44 batteries already inserted. You just have to flick the on-off switch on the back of his head and you're good to go. Each one is equipped with a uniquely coloured LED light in their jaws. If you make them mad, it will flicker to life and burn bright, or you can tame them and they’ll lose their angry glow. Each of the dragons has its own way of expressing its affection (or anger !). Will yours breathe fire or spit poison? You'll need to collect them all to hear the differences in how they sound when they’re cute and cuddly… or roaring mad!

There are numerous ways to play with them and make them react. You can tap their nose or head or just pet them, which will result in warning calls, hisses, growls and roars. Shake them to get them really riled or press and hold the back of their heads for a full-on roar attack. Calm them into tamed mode by petting: start at the tip of the nose and finish at the back of the head. If they need a rest, lay them down in your hands for a quick dragon snooze. If you want a giggle, press and hold both sensors on their head to hear a dragon fart - hysterical laughter guaranteed !

Pierre was very intrigued by the Untamed Mad Lab Minis that he also received to review. The first one that he opened was full of green Biosand, hiding this cheeky dinosaur figure.

The sand can be squished together and holds its shape in a ball which can then be moulded with your fingers.

The second Mad Lab Mini instantly provoked a cry of "ewwwww !" when Pierre opened it. This one didn't contain sand - it was full of slime, or Geoslime, to be precise.

This gooey, gloopy slime is actually surprisingly easy to remove from the two pieces of dinosaur hiding inside - Pierre didn't even need to wash his hands. You just push the neck into the hole to attach the head. You can even swap over the heads to hybridize your creatures. The slime can be squished together and pushed back inside the pot until next time you want to play with it.

Each Fingerlings Untamed Dragon has an RRP of £14.99 and the Untamed Mad Lab Minis are available for £4.99.

Giveaway #716 : Win Beaker Creatures Reactor Pods - closed - winner Susan Shaw

Pierre was delighted this week to discover that we had some Beaker Creatures Reactor Pods to review ... although it turns out that both of his big sisters wanted to get involved in the testing too, so they appeal to older kids as well !

Inside each box, you get one Beaker Creatures Reactor Pod, a little classification card and a mini poster with various scientific facts on the back.

The main event, however, is the Reactor Pods, which look very similar to bath bombs (although they should not be used in the bath as they may stain some surfaces and contact with the eyes or broken skin may cause irritation).

After removing the plastic packaging, we tossed one into a bowl of water and watched it fizz around the bowl before revealing a little plastic container.

We used the same bowl and tossed in the next pod, which fizzed and bubbled as it dissolved.

Pierre got more hands-on when it was his turn and kept touching the pod. He washed his hands afterwards and suffered no adverse effects though.

He thought it was incredibly cool when the little plastic capsule started to appear !

There are 35 different ones to collect in series 1, in "families" of Astrolytes, Frostonians, Oceanites, Buglettes and Minisaurs. If you're lucky, there are also five limited edition 24-carat Creatures, which have a gold colour.

Here are the little creatures that we got - from left to right, Hornfello, Flit, Purtle and Carlmari.

They are ideal as a little pocket money gift or could be given instead of Easter eggs, if you want to cut down on chocolate this year. They have an RRP of £4 but are currently available for £2 from Learning Resources

I have two Beaker Creatures Reactor Pods to give away to a lucky Madhouse Family Reviews reader. Fill in your entries in the Rafflecopter widget below.

DVD review : Dolphin Kick

We made it to the school holidays - woohoo ! - so we've been catching up with lots of fun activities, starting off with watching Dolphin Kick, which has been out on DVD and digital download from 1st April 2019.

It tells the tale of 10-year-old Luke Mahoney, a young boy who is coming to terms with the loss of his mother (which is obviously something that Pierre could relate to). Following up on a promise from his mother, Luke, along with his dad and sister Skyler, sets off on a holiday to the tropical island where his parents were married.

In these beautiful surroundings, he encounters a lost, playful dolphin who they call Echo, who helps put a smile back on his face. Luke soon learns, however, that Echo can't survive by himself and has a family of his own to find. Teaming up with an ocean clean-up team, they set out to help the dolphin reunite with his missing pod.

It's a lovely, heart-warming, family adventure that it guaranteed to please any animal lovers. As well as featuring some great dolphin footage, the film has a clear environmental theme, as well as providing some lovely messages about the importance of friends and family. In many ways, it reminded me of the Dolphin Tale film, which was another dolphin-themed, family-friendly classic.

DOLPHIN KICK Information:
Digital & DVD Date: 1st April 2019
Certificate: PG
Running Time: 90 mins approx.

Disclosure : We received a review copy of the film, in order to share our honest opinion.

Giveaway #715 : Win a copy of Rain Town - closed - winner Adrian Oliver Spence

After telling stories from History to children in classrooms for many years and reading other people’s stories to his own children at bedtime, teacher Andy Donaldson finally decided to write a book of his own. Rain Town is a comical twist on the perennial children’s favourite, the classic comic book “superhero”, and will appeal to children due to its well-paced, engaging and humorous story.

Sidney Rain is an ordinary man with an ordinary job in an ordinary town. Except for the fact that sometimes at night he dresses up as a superhero and heads out living his fantasy. But he’s putting on weight, is about to lose his job and he’s generally not feeling particularly super at all.

Stanley Rain is Sidney’s 12 year old son. He’s an ordinary boy with ordinary friends at an ordinary school. But that school is being taken over by a local entrepreneur and is changing for the worst. And Stanley is not going to let that happen without a fight.

When a mysterious theft takes place, Stanley and his friends will need to turn detective to help save their school. And after being fired at work by his new boss, Sidney will need his friends to help save his soul.

“I wanted to read books to my kids that had a big heart and made us laugh, cry and love the characters. In the end, I wrote one for us,” comments Andy.

Rain Town is Andy Donaldson’s debut children’s book, and is ideal for children age 9 and over, and for parents too– who may well be reading it!

I have a copy of the book to give away to a lucky Madhouse Family Reviews reader. Fill in your entries in the Rafflecopter widget below.

March 2019 Spring and Easter Degustabox review

Hmmmm, just one look in our brand new Degustabox was all that was needed to unleash a few excited squeals from the kids. I can guess what they spotted first - chocolate ! - which is very apt, as this is the Spring and Easter themed box.

After a quick bit of unpacking, they were even more excited, because this month's box is brimming with tasty treats, many of which we'd never tried before. Where to begin?!

This looks like a good place ! KIND Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt (RRP £1.35) comes from a company who promise treats that are as tasty as they are nutritious. You get loads of whole nuts (this bar contains 60% nuts but some go up to 72%) bound together with honey and chocolate. They're gluten free, naturally high in protein and very tasty.

Weetabix on the go (RRP £1.49) is a handy liquid breakfast for those days when you're running short on time and need something to shove in your bag to drink on the bus ride to work ! With a tasty strawberry flavour and containing iron, fibre and protein, it's a convenient option.

Costa Coffee Mocha Italia Signature Blend (RRP £3.70) is "smooth and nutty with notes of caramel", according to the packaging. It's suitable for use with filter and cafetière machines but, as nobody at the Madhouse drinks coffee, we'll be passing it on to a friend.

Moose Juice Extreme Energy (RRP £1.59) is a passion fruit flavour Extreme Energy drink. It is free from sugar but also aspartame and contains added BCAAs and B Vitamins. Looking at the ingredients list, I recognise taurine and caffeine which are presumably the energy providers. I like the idea of a low calorie energy drink without the sugar, so this is currently chilling in the fridge for whenever I feel the need to let loose the moose !

On to a company that we know well but a product that we've never tried before : Green & Black's Truffle (with a Dark centre) and Praline (with a Milk & Hazelnut centre) (RRP 2 x 89p). Unsurprisingly, these were a huge hit with the whole family, in particular the praline one. They taste delicious and are the perfect feel-good treat as they are made with ethically sourced chocolate and no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

I'd never heard of the next company but we loved the products so I'll be looking out for them from now on. Forest Feast Fruit Balls (Milk Chocolate, Mango, Coconut) and Forest Feast Preda Fair Trade Dried Mango (RRP £1.29) both got a unanimous thumbs-up and were quickly polished off ! The mango comes from the Philippines and is beautifully sweet and chewy. The fruit balls are delicious - soft, bite-sized balls of mango blended with coconut and covered in chocolate. Hmmmm !

I was kind and let the Madhouse kids share these ones because they loved them so much. Chum Fruit Bites (2 x 79p) are available in strawberry and apple and sound too good to be true : 100% fruit, vegan, high in fibre, kosher, gluten free, nothing artificial, no preservatives, no concentrates ... just the goodness of real fruit baked into magical fruit bites. 15% of profits are donated to Wildaid.org too, so you can feel even better about eating them. A big hit at the Madhouse.

The only savoury product in this month's box, Red Red Super Stews (RRP £2.99) offers a quick, African-inspired meal. We got Hot Black Eyed Beans & Tomato, while other subscribers got Red Beans & Sweet Potato. These vegetarian stews have been created in partnership with celebrated chef Zoe Adjonyoh from Zoe's Ghana Kitchen, a pop-up in Brixton. A mixture of  black eyed beans, tomatoes, red onion, spices and certified sustainable and traceable red palm oil, you just need to add boiling water then leave it to stand, like an upmarket pot noodle ! It is perfect as a quick lunch for one when you fancy something a little different.

Jubel Beer Cut With Peach (£1.80) is a delicious experiment that combines a lively lager with the zest of freshly ripe peaches. Naturally infused, gluten free and vegan, it is now available in Sainsbury's and is well worth trying out. It's light, refreshing and deliciously fruity.

Willie's Cacao Single Estate Chocolate (£1.99) was a bit of a pot luck product, as there were various types going out in this month's boxes. We got Milk Chocolate with Juicy Passion Fruit which was a surprising flavour combination but one which, it turns out, is delicious. The range promises to bring back the long forgotten flavours of the world's great Single Estate Cacaos. For us, it was a big hit. Only natural flavours are used and they make everything themselves, from bean to bar. We'll definitely be looking out for the other flavours to try.

Ballymaloe Original Relish is a product that we already knew because we had had some in a Christmas hamper a few years ago. It is a very versatile and tasty product, that can be spread on burgers and sandwiches, added to salads, dolloped next to slices of quiche and sausage rolls, served with grilled meat straight from the BBQ (and even stirred through mashed potatoes and rice, according to the Madhouse kids !). Whatever you do with it, it's delicious ! It's gluten free, vegan friendly and all natural.

Finally, Terry's Chocolate Orange Minis Exploding Candy were a huge hit with the Madhouse kids, while, I must admit, I did have a few reservations - I've always loved the traditional round Chocolate Orange that goes with Christmas ! All the same, I forced myself to join in with eating them ! Each mini chocolate orange segment contains popping candy, which had us all in giggles as we munched our way through the bag. Very tasty, I must admit !

This month's suggested recipe is a Ballymaloe Ham and Cheese Toastie with Relish. (I was expecting something sweet, given the high proportion of chocolate and sweet options in this month's box !)

We all loved the contents of this month's box, which is hardly surprising, given the high proportion of sweet treats ! A subscription to Degustabox costs £12.99 per month including delivery, with each box having a value of much more than that, but the great news is, I have a discount coupon code for you which means you'll get the first box for just £7.99 - enter code PKUFE at the checkout.

Disclosure : We received the box in order to write an honest review. As a Degustabox blogger, I receive all of the products that go into the monthly boxes, but subscribers may not get exactly the same selection.

Madhouse recipe : Chocolate, Coconut & Banana Breakfast Pancakes

The Groovy Food Company recently sent us over some of their products, along with a recipe for Chocolate, Coconut & Banana Breakfast Pancakes. They are ideal for weekend breakfasts or brunches, but we ate ours in the evening which worked too !

If you fancy trying them out, we used Organic Coconut Flour, Organic Virgin Coconut Oil and Organic Agave Chocolate Sauce, all from The Groovy Food Company.

Coconut flour has a very fine texture, not that much different to regular flour, which surprised me. It's rich in fibre and protein and is perfect for those following a gluten-free diet.

Coconut oil has a high smoke point and no trans fatty acids. It may be solid or liquid, depending on how warm it is. We were all amazed at just how tasty the Agave Chocolate Sauce is !

Chocolate, Coconut & Banana Breakfast Pancakes

serves 6

ingredients :

3tbsp The Groovy Food Company Organic Coconut Flour
1 large banana, mashed
4 large eggs, beaten
2tsp Raw Cacao Powder or Cocoa Powder
1tsp Vanilla Bean Paste or 1 Vanilla Pod, deseeded
2tbsp The Groovy Food Company Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
pinch of salt

Garnish :

2 bananas, sliced
2 handfuls Raw Coconut Chips, Toasted
50g Dark Chocolate Shavings
The Groovy Food Company Organic Agave Chocolate Sauce

Method:

Get mashing the bananas !

Put all the ingredients except for the coconut oil into a bowl and blend together with a hand stick blender. (I just stirred it by hand with a spoon and it worked fine.)

Melt the coconut oil on a gentle heat and put into a separate bowl.

Heat your pancake pan or frying pan over a medium heat and take a square of kitchen roll, dab it in the oil.

Once the oil is hot, take 3/4 ladle of the pancake mixture and pour it into the pan.

Cook until golden brown on the underside (approx 1 minute) then flip over and cook until golden brown on the other side (about 30 seconds).

Once you've cooked all six pancakes, stack them back on top of each other in a set of three to warm through in the hot pan and flip over to warm the other side. (I didn't bother as mine stayed warm enough.)

Serve warm with a generous drizzle of agave chocolate sauce, sliced bananas, toasted coconut chips and chocolate shavings on top.

The kids loved them (especially due to the agave chocolate sauce !) and gobbled them up. They have a thicker, rougher texture than regular pancakes and we debated that they should in fact be called banana fritters. Whatever they're called, we'll happily be eating them again !

Disclosure : We received some ingredients, along with the recipe, from The Groovy Food Company.
